We had the good fortune of connecting with Dontaé Thomas and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dontaé, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I pursued an artistic/creative career because of the freedom I had to just myself. To be able to stand in my truth and authenticity is something I take pride in. I’ve always looked at art as a gateway to self-expression. I’m an empath and I feel everything on a pretty deep level. I personally feel that as a creative, you withhold the capability to see things past the surface.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
What sets me apart is my personality. I know I have a certain light energy about myself that’s welcoming and makes people feel comfortable being in my space. I feel that me being able to operate in my authenticity has gotten me in rooms and in alignment with the opportunities that elevated my career. And that’s something that I’m extremely proud of because in today’s culture, it’s easy to fall into the trap of comparison if you don’t know who you are or what your purpose is. Yes, my personality has played apart in getting me where I am, but so has my consistency. I’ve been doing makeup professionally for 11-years now and I’ve grown so much of the course of that time. Of course it has come with challenges, and hasn’t always been easy, but I never gave up because it’s something that I genuinely have a passion for. It’s such a big part of who I am. Doing anything else is uncanny lol
The makeup industry has become a lot more competitive over the past couple of years. What I’ve learned along my journey is to stay focused on my why and never lose sight of that. No matter how “over saturated” may seem. You never miss what’s for you.
I want the world to know that this isn’t just “makeup”. There’s so many layers of this industry that people tend to overlook because most of them think it’s just putting makeup on people, but it’s so much deeper than that, at least in my opinion.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Okay so I am actually a NOLA girlie who moved to Houston for a little, then moved back to NOLA once I got pregnant with my daughter so I didn’t get to get full scope of the Houston scene but some places I loved to go to (food wise) were Velvet Taco, Mastros, Joey Uptown, The Breakfast Club, Blue Sushi Sake Grill, The Rouxpour, Juliet, and Prey. I enjoyed going to Urban Social to hang out. Post Oak spa to relax and HEB was my guilty pleasure lol

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to dedicate this shoutout to my family. They have been my rock throughout my journey up until this point and I know it may sound cliche, but I really don’t know where I’d be without them. Their support is unwavering. If no one else in this world has my back, I know they do. 1000%.
