We had the good fortune of connecting with Ebony Williams and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ebony, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I decided to start my own business because the way the legal community was struggling to embrace the work from home method was disappointing. Lawyers were being punished and threatened to return to the office if they did not perform how the powers that be wanted them to, I personally experienced this. This type of micromanaging was getting in the way of being able to effectively help clients which was the most important thing to me. I personally believe and know that you can be productive in a remote environment and I wanted that flexibility at this point in my career.
I also wanted the flexibility to be able to be a more affordable option for my clients and work with those who needed a more flexible pay terms. I can do that now while still earning a living.
I tried to have my own business before but it didn’t work because I wasn’t fully sold on the idea 14-15 years ago. But once I fully stepped into where I know God was leading me to open up this business, I didn’t have a lick of fear or anxiousness behind the process and it has paid off tremendously in just a years time.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I’m so proud and excited to wake up and do what I love on my own terms. The flexibility in being able to call your shot is a joy like no other. Please believe it’s hard work, oftentimes I have to be my own bookkeeper, track down outstanding balances owed to the firm, I have to be a counselor and wipe tears, but at the end of the day, the joy that I get from helping someone resolve their matter makes every headache worth it. My calling is to help others, that’s the gift and calling I been blessed with so this business allows me to do just that.
I’ve learned so much: when to wear my business managing attorney/owner hat and 2) when I need to take it off and hold your hand.
This brand and story was built on tears, faith, and sheer will. The stubborn belief in myself that I can build a prosperous law firm with just a dream. And I’ve done just that and exceeded my dreams. I now know I was dreaming too small.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love this question, since I’m born and raised in Houston I feel like I have a good grasp on the staples of the city but there’s still so many new places that pop up daily.
For dinner- we are absolutely going to Grangers in the medical center, maybe the original Ninfas, Winsome Prime is a new spot that’s a great ambiance and good food, Loch Bar to start.

I love love love outdoors and took people watch so we may go to discovery green or Herman park for fresh air and to chat, maybe walk the bayou!

We definitely gonna have a night out and may go to midtown to dance, 3rd Ward to get some good late night bites, Eado is a great walkable part of the city that is fun to hang out in.

Finally, brunch. Brunch is a must have. We going to the staple-Breakfast Klub, Leeland house, Brass tacks coffee shop, Mo Better Brews, Pour Behavior, Dish Society just to name a few!

I love to have fun and live life to the fullest so whereever my heart leads is where I’m going.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I have a whole tribe and community I can shout out and I’d ve here all day trying to do so. But there are a few that played a pivotal role in my story and one day I’ll be able to tell you in detail why: 1) my family-especially my dear departed mom and dad; my sorority-Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc where I met some of my closest friends, my dearest friend-Nicola Thomas, my former church family-Higher Dimension Church, the first job I got out of law school that paid me $7.50/hr but I was so thankful for it because it allowed me to get my first post grad apt and new car-H.E.A.R.T. Non profit; Ms. Carolyn Robey and my friend Caryn, who gave me a place to stay for a few months when I couldn’t afford housing right out of law school and just sooooooo many friends, family members who poured into me in those earlier years of my career and anchored me. I can’t say thank you enough to all of my community named here and not for how their support and belief in me made me the attorney, business owner and now judicial candidate here today.
