We had the good fortune of connecting with Edward “Nick” Brown and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Edward “Nick”, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Like with every decision in life the decision to start a business is a mix between gut instinct, logic and passion.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I’m a managing partner at Porterie and Brown LLC a Houston based real estate development firm. This company was started with several goals in mind; To design great functional living spaces and stabilize up and coming areas in Houston. Success in real estate isn’t an instant process; Some deals yielded great profits some not so much. It took me about 2 years to learn the business inside and out and well over 2 years to buy my first real estate deal. Throughout the years I’ve learned that real estate much like many other industries it’s strongly based on networking. I had to learn no matter how experienced I am it’s ok to seek a 2nd opinion or 3rd opinion. If you have ever been in a Porterie and Brown LLC renovated or built home you’ll notice the attention to detail we take in each property rather it being lighting or landscaping. We take pride in details and design. When ever I’m asked what do I regret the most; I always say I wish that I could’ve started at an earlier age. For example when I first moved to Houston (2007) I could’ve purchased land in some neighborhoods for as little as 5k, now we’re buying the same land for 40k to 50k. One last thing I would like to convey is that it’s important to emphasize opportunities in trades to the youth. We need more skilled labor (Electricians, Plumbers, HVAC, Carpenters)
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?

Here are a few of my favorite places around town Menil Collection, Herman Memorial Park/Houston Zoo, Houston Dynamo Game, The Flat, Prospect Park, Don Carlos Mexican Restaurant, Los Tios Mexican Restaurant, Crafty Crab, Pappadeax, Katz Delicatessen.
