We had the good fortune of connecting with Felicha Jones and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Felicha, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
When I first opened my business, I thought I would just start a childcare center and keep it small and do this for the rest of my life. Boy was I wrong. I started my childcare business and within a year’s time I officially started my nonprofit organization. From there the windows of opportunity and the doors that have opened for me have been simply amazing.

What should our readers know about your business?
Smart Scholars Academy, Foundation and University all hold a special place in my heart. The Academy is a licensed in-home daycare and my staff and I get to teach the students at an early age the importance of getting a good education. The Foundation is our nonprofit 501c3 organization that allows us to service youth and teens in the Sunnyside area. The University is a newly found online Homeschool company that focuses on education as well. I get excited every time I have to talk about any of my businesses. After 3 years of me working hard to establish reputable business ethics, I now feel as though my calling is being fulfilled. However, for me to get to where I am today; trust me it did not come easy by a long shot. I had sleepless nights, & early morning conversations with God. The challenges were far great in the beginning stages of each of my businesses due to lack of support and funding. Since then so many doors have opened for me. Most importantly, I want to share the one lesson that I have learned along the way with hopes that it will help someone else, whatever you do, please do not put your focus on people and what they have to say concerning your business., keep your focus, do what you know you’ve been called to do, take it one day at a time and by all means spend time with the Lord and ask Him to order your steps concerning your business and its growth.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would start out by taking her to see my office so that she can see for herself all the great things that we are doing here with Smart Scholars. From there, I would plan a fun-filled week for us to visit a few of the museums here in Houston, Texas. Dinner would vary from day to day at such restaurants like Steak 48 and/or The Taste of Texas. I’d also ride her around the city hitting both the North, South, East and West side of Houston so that she can see for herself just how big Houston really is. We would also make the most important stop of all by visiting the Galleria! of Course we can’t forget about Galveston; yep, we’d go visit some of the tourist attractions they have there for sure. I’d also probably cook breakfast for her most mornings so that we don’t have to eat out so much. However, dinner would be determined based upon the side of town we are on at that specific time. A few days I’d allow her to rest and relax at my home (or the hotel) just to make sure she isn’t worn out by the time she returns home.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition in your life?
I would personally like to shout out all the many supporters that support me and my businesses. I have watched my audience grow from just a few people supporting me, to now hundreds reach out on any given event that I host and provide their support. It’s those people who have helped push me to another level when it comes to enhancing the lives of our children. Thank you to the hundreds of you that share what I post on social media, thank you to the many of you that are always commenting and making sure that I know that I have your support, thank you to those of you that continuously remind me daily that I am an inspiration to you. I am extremely grateful to have each of you in my life!
