We had the good fortune of connecting with Mike Watson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mike, what is the most important factor behind your success?
Transparency. When a potential new client reaches out to me, everything they might want to know is laid out for them to see. I share pricing up-front, let them know exactly what they will and will not get, and let them see me as a person who’s there to support them and to be their advocate on their wedding day.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
My goal has always been to help bridge the gap between a traditional wedding reception and a night club scene. There’s a stark difference between traditional-style wedding deejays and club-style deejays. One group is a bit old-fashioned for Millennial and Generation Z couples, and the other is too unprofessional for an elegant wedding. I want my clients to have a DJ who is well-rehearsed and professional, while at the same time energetic and able to pull guests from their seats. Along the way, I’ve learned how to “run the show” and help with day-of coordinating duties because in this DIY day and age, most of the time there is no wedding planner or official coordinator. I’ve even had to open the doors for the bride to walk down the aisle because there was no one else to do it!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
It would have to be in the Fall so I can take them to the Texas Rennesaince Festival! I went there every year as a kid, and now my wife and I have a tradition of taking our own kids. It’s seriously one of my favorite places! Other than that, we’d go on a hunt for the cities best tacos, fried chicken, and dim sum.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
When you click with other vendors and work well as a team, it makes for a hugely successful wedding. I’d like to give big shoutouts to: Aiyesha Minott of “Polished Occasions by Aiyesha”, Jessica Jeffries of “The Jeffries”, and Ashlen Lee of “Ashlen Sydney Photography”.  Working with these teams has been a pleasure because they’re the best as what they do!
