We had the good fortune of connecting with Genaro Olivares and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Genaro, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Since I was a little boy, I would see my dad work in construction. I would go to job sites with him and was always intrigued by the framing of homes and using power tools. When I bought my first home, I was able to start putting into practice the things I had learned while at work with my dad. Then, I started buying rental properties and would do the remodeling for them myself. Soon, people began asking how much I would charge them for something similar and then began the idea of GO-CON LLC.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We are custom home builders but also provide remodeling, lot clearing and site work. We proudly serve the Houston and surrounding areas. What sets us apart is that we’re a small family owned business and I actually meet the owners myself and deal with them directly.

I started with my own remodels for my personal and rental properties. Then I started building houses for myself also. This gave me a kick start but it was not easy, because I still had my full time job and was doing this on the side. I had to juggle in between both while still providing quality work for both. I I started my first project in 2002 and have never stopped since, I’ve always had something in the works.

A lesson I’ve learned along the way is for anyone starting a business is to not be scared of getting a bank loan or any kind of financing. This helps a lot in the beginning.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would take my friends/family to try all kinds of food downtown to POST Houston, to have a taste at all the diverse food options we have. Also food truck parks.
Woodlands to a nice restaurant, walk in the Woodlands Waterway
For nightlife I would take them to Kirby’s Ice House, Midtown, Bar’s on Main St. Downtown. Fabian’s Latin Flavors
Discovery Green
Minute Maid
Galveston 1hr away, ocean
Kemah
Lake Houston, Lake Conroe
Eleanor Tinsley Park – Downtown views

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My family – when I started, they were the ones helping me with picking up materials, and working overtime on weekends to help me get the company going. My wife Brenda helped with interior designing ideas, Giselle helped with marketing and Aricia helped with technology and administrative duties.
