We had the good fortune of connecting with Gerem3 and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Gerem3, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
Being an artist was the only thing that really made sense. I can’t but truly be myself COMPLETELY when I’m writing or performing. Music just cuts me wide open. I can’t hide, I can’t pretend. I’m my strongest and most vulnerable and have the most fun doing what I do!
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a singer, songwriter and dancer. I’d always desired being a performer but I evaded pursuing music out of fear. But over the years I always managed to find myself in some proximity of it. I would watch old vhs recordings of James Brown and Patti LaBelle when I was baby. I would beg my dad to take me with him to his quartet rehearsals. My sister tricked me into joining the youth choir at church. Eventually, it became all I could imagine myself doing. Growing up, I was small, dark skinned, shy, had a high pitched voice and had no athletic ability beyond dancing so I was a magnet for constant bullying. So, oddly enough, I just RECENTLY got the courage to chase my dream and I haven’t looked back since.
Anything that I do now creatively, reminds of my younger self. I feel like I owe that part of myself so much and I’m making him so proud. I feel like it’s so important for artists to honor , nurture and cling to that part of themselves. It just makes the endeavor pure and joyful.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
NODA for sure! NoDa 101 is a karaoke bar here in Charlotte that is so much fun! French Toast at Midnight Diner! A little Roller Skating at Kate’s. Uptown during the summer is bomb! A cute little evening stroll around the BB&T Ballpark is my fave!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There’s so many people and places and experiences I could shoutout for my overall development artistically and professionally.
My dance teachers Candace Jennings and Chandra McCloud Glover, these two women POURED into my love of dance as a teenager.
Mr Michael Washington. Rest his soul. He molded and believed in my voice from the very beginning.
My choreographer Alex White who’s become one my best friends!
My best friend and stylist, Onyx!
My manager (and part time mom) Myranda.
And my village of listeners! My imaginary friends!
I think that’s all. Sorry didn’t mean to give a Grammy speech! Lol!!!
