We had the good fortune of connecting with Gwalla Guappo and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Gwalla, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I’m Gwalla Guappo from Third Ward, Houston Texas the southside of town.
My upbringings impacted my life because, I grew up at a early age. I helped raise my baby sister when she was a baby and being one of the first people in my family to earn an Associates Degree, which isn’t much but, for me that was an accomplishment. My father was killed so I really didn’t know him as a kid.
Growing up my granny raised me the best she could but often had to work a lot leaving me home alone. I would watch television and think or play outside but, one particular day things were different, when my granny didn’t go to work on this day. I never understood why not until I heard a knock on the door. So I ran to the room to tell my granny someone was at the door and when she came to the door I looked at her and said “who are these people?” My granny looked down at me and said, “CPS”. I asked what was that, she sat me down and told me child protective services asked again, what is that she said I love you and Daeisha, which is my baby sister but, I work a lot and I don’t have anybody to watch you all. Then the CPS lady looked at me and said “you and your sister are coming with me.” As I packed my clothes and thinking why me was I that bad of a kid? I didn’t ask for much for Christmas, I didn’t ask for most expensive shoes. Just maybe if I didn’t ask for anything I would have been able to be raised at home. Then, I thought my life is about to change, so me and my sister packed our little things we had while the CPS lady and my granny talked, I asked my sister Daeisha “why are they taking us for?”, as she laughed and played running around. I was about 6 or 7 years of age my sister was about 3 years of age. I really didn’t understand that much of what was going on but, I knew I was leaving my family .
That was the day I told myself I’m going to shine in everything I do because, I put that in my head at a young age, this is the situation that has impacted me today with my Gwalla Boyz Clothing line and Gwalla Boyz Independent Music Label which is now growing all over the world today.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I want to let others know that it’s not an easy journey and nothing is given only earned. The stripes, I earned, the success, I earned, the respect, I earned. It all starts with who you are to yourself, if no one supports you, support yourself and all else will follow.
I started from the bottom, with nothing but a vision and passion in believing in me regardless of what others thought or think of me.
I remain true and loyal to me and GBE that’s what it’s about. Loyalty and grinding.
I got to where I am today by doing shows, traveling, networking, moving to Chicago for a year really opened my eyes to different parts of the music industry and the do’s and don’ts of entertainment.
I am most proud to have artist that are really tied to the brand GBE and the cities and heights we are reaching inclusively. I have a major artist in California, Heechie Gwalla that’s taking things to another level for us, as well as myself. I’m working on a new project now Gwalla Lingo, this project will help our new fans truly know how we started and how far we’ve come today. 2021 is a major year for GBE and we are coming for everything and everybody.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love Westheimer, it’s a full strip of great food, shopping and bars.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to shoutout a few monumental people that has helped my vision, brand growth and support along my career:
My Granny for inspiring me and sticking with me through rough patches.
GBE former editor, Tiffany for support, time and guidance throughout the years with Gwalla Boyz Entertainment.
Shoutout to all my real supporters and fans staying with me from the trenches and getting it out the mud.
Last person that made a great impact in my life from birth Kenneth.
