We had the good fortune of connecting with Irene Mayfield and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Irene, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
When I think about risk-taking, I think about stepping out of the box even if it’s uncomfortable. They say success starts at the end of your comfort zone and it is very true.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
It all started in 2020 when the pandemic came about. I was already into art, I was just trying to find a new medium to work with since I had the time. Resin epoxy was maybe the second or third medium that came to mind, and I pursued it. It definitely wasn’t easy when I first started, it was really messy and very time consuming. After about a year I got better and faster which is how I got more successful. My pieces got better, I got more efficient with making my craft and shipping. It took time and patience.
Trail and error is with everything in life. So I’m learning new techniques all the time. My pieces are bold and sometimes a statement piece. I want to be known for making my art pop ans for taking risks when it comes to working with new mediums for art.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend was visiting Houston…honestly she would know better spots than I do haha. I would still take her to the art district and then Bellaire. So many cool things to see in the art district and so many cool pictures to take. Then in Bellaire there’s so many options for food. Anything that’s out doors with fresh air. Having to do with art, poetry and a beautiful view of downtown Houston.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
@art.isforeverybody on IG! Gigi is such a unique and amazing individual. She makes me any everyone around her feel comfortable and like they can fully be themselves. Aka expressing amazing forms of art. I appreciate her appreciation for art because she’s open to any kind of art. She understands the means of no limits when it comes to art. But most of all, she shines the light on artists who need to be recognized! The outcasts, the ones who stick out but don’t even try. The things people surpass she immediately sees and finds beautiful. Thank you for always noticing us Gigi!
