We had the good fortune of connecting with Jackie Brown and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jackie, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
The funny thing about my thought process behind starting a business was that I didn’t have one, or at least I wasn’t aware of it. It felt like I was jumping into something that I had no idea how to do. But looking back at it, I have to remind myself that I grew up with both of my parents owning their own businesses and working for themselves. I’m sure I picked up on their habits and way of life subconsciously. I had a variety of part time jobs between the ages 17 and 22, and I could never stick to them for long because of my clash with the management. I always thought that I could do what they were doing better, and I hated the fact that someone else was profiting off of labor that I was doing. When I was in college, I never had a desire to work any type of job that would be considered as corporate or “9-5”. I strongly dislike the idea of having a boss. So realistically, what other option did I have other than to work for myself? I would’ve done it much sooner than 22 had I not been so scared. I spent more time suppressing my desire to become an entrepreneur than I did thinking about how I would become one.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My art is in my music, content, and words. I used to think that art was just the kind you see in a frame or on a canvas, but now I understand that art is found in a variety of ways that humans express themselves. That’s one thing that helped me become comfortable with unleashing all of my talents rather than having to pick and stick to one. A lot of us are multi-hyphenates internally, but I am one of the few who has decided to express all of my interests and talents externally as well. I’m a rapper, writer, dancer, actress, model, motivational speaker, personal trainer, and I was once a certified real estate agent. I’ll be working towards another certification soon that I am very excited about.
I got to where I am today with a lot of confidence and even MORE patience. It isn’t easy being a young entrepreneur with anxiety and ADD. Ha! I’m pretty sure that what saved me was my willingness to look silly and make mistakes. You don’t know how far you can leap if you never make the damn jump. I always made and will continue to make the jump. There may come a time when you don’t make the jump, and you fall on your ass. That’s how you learn what does and what doesn’t work. The map back to the top can be found at the bottom. Once there, I always try again with my new lessons in hand.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Lucky for me, my best friend loves Mexican food just as much as I do, so I definitely take her to my favorite Mexican spots including: Pico’s on Kirby, Cyclone, Anaya’s, and El Tiempo. If I’m leaving my house, I’m going to a restaurant, the gym, or a bookstore. I don’t go out to clubs or bars too often, but when I do, I love going to Belle Station in Midtown. They play good music, the drinks are affordable, and the bartender, Jake, is such a cutie. I would love to put Crocker Bar on the itinerary because it is my favorite bar in the gay district, but an entire different Jackie Brown comes out over there. Ha! Crocker Bar is the place to let loose. For a more relaxed vibe, we could visit one of the multiple museums that Houston has to offer.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to shout out 3 of my favorite authors: Sam Harris, Jodi Picoult, and Teal Swan. Reading is one of my favorite things to do because of the way that a well written sentence can transform my entire way of thinking about and seeing life. The books that I have read by those three have provided me an abundant amount of insight, comfort, and escape. I recommend their work to any and everyone.
