We had the good fortune of connecting with Janeisha Mays and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Janeisha, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
Someone once told me, that if you think about a scale being balanced, it means there is no movement. I have learned there is no such thing as balance but over time I have learned how to give and take and what’s most important in that moment. Learning prioritization in my personal life was a lesson after burnout took over my life. I was running off fumes from working full time in the hospital as an ER nurse, running my business, and trying to balance my personal life, and all this time I was neglecting my basic needs. I was not sleeping much, if any most days, constantly flipping my schedule back and forth, my eating habits were terrible and I had put on a lot of weight. Overall I was miserable. I had to restructure my whole life when I realized I was a candle burning at both ends. I had to learn that you will not always be 100% so when you only have 75% to give, give 100% of that 75%. Somedays won’t always be your best and that’s ok, but continue to show up and when you need to take a break, do it then and not when your body forces you to.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
The journey with Eudaimonia Wellness & Beauty has not been an easy feat but I have fallen in love with what I am creating and the lives I am changing more and more every day. I had to learn that for me to take my business where I wanted it to go, I had to change a lot of things about myself. I had to learn what Janeisha wanted to do, what Janeisha liked to do and at what capacity does Janeisha need to ask someone else for help. I didn’t realize how prideful I was until I felt stuck, stagnant, and embarrassed. After talking with my coach, my boyfriend, and my best friend who is a therapist, I had to sit, alone, and figure out what was going to be my next move. It’s easy to quit, but I knew that wasn’t an option for me. I realized I was out of alignment with myself, and nothing else was going to make sense. I was trying to conform to what I thought I wanted my business to be and look like based on someone else’s viewpoints. When I realized that, it was a game changer. Eudaimonia Wellness & Beauty is a wellness spa with a focus on disease prevention and health promotion. Our goal is to help our clients achieve “Eudaimonia” which means “the highest good humans could strive towards, a life well lived or human flourishing.” Janeisha, who is currently in school to become a nurse practitioner, knew that she wanted to change the world with vitamins, and disease prevention and found her way into functional medicine. Focusing on the root cause of her client’s problems has allowed Janeisha to lean into a different level of care and servicing of her clients. Eudaimonia Wellness & Beauty is not just another wellness spa, it’s a self-care oasis. We believe in transformational experiences, because how else can you become the best version of yourself if you are not equipped with the tools for success?

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Each time I come home to Houston, I feel like a tourist. I love the culture of the city and I love to patronize black-owned businesses. The bike tour through 3rd ward is a must activity because it’s a vibe. I love being able to get the best of both worlds, good food, good drinks and good music.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My spa tribe has been the real MVPs in this season of my life but even besides my spa tribe, I have been surrounding myself with a new group of amazing women and it has been the game changer in my life. My coach has been pivotal in my growth. I must say, Candace Holyfield Parker has continued to keep me motivated, push me when I need it, and see a lot more in me than I could see in myself. When I got back to reading this year, the book that took my mind to the next level was the book by Jen Sincero, “You Are a Badass at Making Money.” If you need a gut punch and a reality check, this book I highly recommend.
