We had the good fortune of connecting with Jasirah Johnson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jasirah, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking.
I think risk is beneficial, because it has lead me, Jasirah, to great outcomes. For example, I devoted 110% into my business, even during summer break, instead of participating in other hobbies I enjoyed. Also, I had to sacrifice shopping and vacations, which were extremely difficult, but worth it. Lastly, starting an ice cream truck business was challenging and a huge learning experience because I knew nothing about the industry, but I knew my business would succeed.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Icy Kool Kreations always listens and welcomes suggestions from our community and customers. I am excited about making money and saving for my college education. Starting and maintaining Icy Kool Kreations is not easy at all. I say this because there was so much paperwork required before selling any ice cream. My school friends think all I did was purchased a truck and start selling ice cream, but that’s not the case, as there are many steps involved. Most of the challenges were overcome by the support of my Mom and networking with other Ice cream truck owners.

When I was 4 years old, I remember my older brother would sell “kool kups” to kids in the neighborhood. We later moved to a new community and once my brother started high school, I wanted to continue what he started. So, I asked my mom, if I could continue selling “kool kups” and she said “yes” (as I knew she would). I then became the “kool kup” girl of the neighborhood and made some good money. Unfortunately, the pandemic started, and we shut things down. During my 8th grade year in middle year, I was ready to make money again. Of course, times had changed, and my Mom stated “we could NOT have alot of people coming to the front door”. So I came up with the idea of going to the customers. I then came up the name, Icy Kool Kreations, designed my own logo and that’s when my Mom knew I was serious. On my 14th birthday, I received my LLC certificate, which was best gift ever, and here we are!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We would visit Towne Lake for a relaxing afternoon lunch and walk. Of course, we would visit the famous Whataburger, a few times during the week. I would take them shopping at the Galleria mall and have lunch at Grand Luxe. After all that walking, we would go scooter riding. For a day of relaxation, we would get pedicures and great foot massages. If she’s here on Sunday, we would attend Lighthouse Church (where my family and I are members), then find some delicious taco trucks Downtown. I love to tumble, so we would visit Discovery Green for a fun evening. Some of my other favorite spots are Typoon Texas Waterpark & Andretti GoKart,.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I am thankful for my parents for helping me start Icy Kool Kreations. They invested their time by assisting with everything, from shopping/purchasing a vehicle to completing the build-out. I receive constant support and knowledge about business operations and financial literacy. I’m also grateful for my family and close friends for supporting me and praying for my business.
