Meet Jason Becker | CWI/CWE

We had the good fortune of connecting with Jason Becker and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jason, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
My thought process behind starting my own business was driven by a combination of passion, opportunity, and a desire to create something meaningful in the welding industry. I’ve always been passionate about welding and education, and I saw a gap in the market for hands-on, short-term training programs that cater to beginners, hobbyists, and professionals seeking to improve their skills.
Additionally, having worked in the industry, I recognized the importance of proper training and certification and wanted to provide a space where individuals and companies could achieve their goals effectively. Starting my own business allowed me to build a platform that not only offers high-quality training and certification but also fosters innovation and community.
I knew it would be challenging, but I believed in the value of hard work, the importance of filling a need, and the potential impact of my contributions to the industry. It was about aligning my skills and experience with a vision that could truly make a difference.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
At Underground Metal Works, we specialize in providing comprehensive welding education and training, offering courses in MIG, TIG, and Stick welding. Our programs cater to a diverse range of students, from beginners to seasoned professionals seeking to enhance their skills. We pride ourselves on maintaining small class sizes, typically capped at five students, to ensure personalized instruction and hands-on experience.
Our facility, located in Orlando, Florida, is equipped with state-of-the-art equipment, including ESAB North America machines, providing our students with access to industry-standard tools.
What sets us apart is our focus on delivering high-quality, practical training that prepares students for real-world applications. Whether someone wants to learn for a hobby, pursue a new career, or enhance their current skill set, we provide a supportive and effective learning environment.
Our journey to this point has been both challenging and rewarding. Establishing a specialized training center required navigating various obstacles, including securing appropriate facilities, acquiring advanced equipment, and developing a curriculum that meets industry standards. We overcame these challenges through perseverance, continuous learning, and a steadfast commitment to our vision.
Throughout this journey, we’ve learned the importance of adaptability and the value of community support. Building strong relationships with industry professionals and listening to the needs of our students have been crucial in refining our programs and services.
We want the world to know that Underground Metal Works is more than just a welding school; it’s a place where individuals gain the skills and confidence to excel in the welding industry. Our mission is to empower others through education, equipping them to achieve their goals and contribute meaningfully to the trades.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Day 1: Universal Studios Islands of Adventure
I’d kick off the trip with a full day at Universal Studios Islands of Adventure. I love roller coasters, so we’d hit all the major rides like the VelociCoaster and the Hulk. It’s the perfect way to start the week with an adrenaline rush.
Day 2: Wekiwa Springs
Next, we’d head to Wekiwa Springs and probably rent some kayaks. We could kayak through the springs, swim in the crystal-clear water, or just relax and enjoy the wildlife. It’s a great way to recharge and appreciate the peaceful side of Florida.
Day 3: Topgolf
For some fun competition and good food, we’d spend the day at Topgolf. It’s the perfect spot to have some laughs, play games, and enjoy a casual yet exciting atmosphere.
Day 4: Charley’s Steak House
Midweek, we’d go for dinner at Charley’s Steak House on International Drive. Their steaks are out of this world, and the drinks are some of the best in town. It’s my go-to spot for a top-notch dining experience. The Bison Ribeye is the best thing on the menu
Day 5: St. Augustine
We’d take a day trip to St. Augustine, the oldest city in the United States. Exploring the historic streets, visiting landmarks like the Castillo de San Marcos, and walking along St. George Street are must-dos. We’d grab some amazing local food at one of the local restaurants and like Harry’s Seafood Bar and Grill and enjoy the city’s rich history.
Day 6: Ponce Inlet and Deep-Sea Fishing
To keep the adventure going, we’d head to Ponce Inlet and hire a charter boat for some deep-sea fishing. There’s nothing like being out on the water, whether we’re catching fish or just soaking up the ocean views.
Day 7: Clearwater Beach
We’d wrap up the week with a trip to Clearwater Beach. It’s one of the most beautiful beaches in Florida, with powdery white sand and stunning Gulf Coast sunsets. We’d check out the Seaquarium and a few of the local shops and hit up Frenchy’s for lunch before heading back to Orlando.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I believe no one achieves success alone, and I owe a great deal of my journey to the incredible people who have guided, supported, and inspired me along the way. First, I’d like to thank Don Watson, my co-worker at the Ironworkers Union, who played a pivotal role in mentoring me in fabrication skills. His patience and expertise laid the foundation for much of what I do today.
Scott Witkowski, a personal friend and mentor, deserves recognition for teaching me so much about inspection—his guidance has been invaluable in shaping my technical abilities. Daryl Peterson and Andy Provost, both good friends and mentors, have helped me immensely in my journey as a Certified Welding Inspector (CWI). Their encouragement and expertise have been instrumental in helping me navigate my career.
Lastly, I’d like to give a huge shoutout to Ryan Eubank, who taught me the true meaning of being an effective educator and a life-changer. His approach to teaching and empowering others is something I strive to emulate every day.
To all of them, I’m deeply grateful for their mentorship, friendship, and belief in me. They’ve each left a lasting impact on my career and life.
