We had the good fortune of connecting with Jeanna Hawkins and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jeanna, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
Art is my passion, and has always been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. If it were not vocal, it was some other medium, ever since my primary years in school. My passion grew for being creative, the more I was exposed to. There is something powerful in pulling something from your heart, mind and spirit and making it real or tangible. There was always a desire to share those things with the world. In my opinion, sculpting something out of nothing in a figurative and literal sense, brings joy to the world. When something you have created resonates with the public, whether that be many or few, most creatives will agree it brings them joy too. Think of it in the perspective of creating a child and watching that child as it develops into adolescence, then teenage years, on into adulthood. What you may think it would be when it first starts out, may be totally different from what it becomes but there is much beauty in its’ becoming. I view art in that same way, the inception is only an idea, a premise if you will, when you start giving it form, the form may alter or skew in its design and development, but in the end it is something you can be proud to have put the work into to create.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I created A Perfect Type, LLC as a way to educate and assist other business owners on their journey through entrepreneurship. In doing that, I also exposed myself to different industries. The fact that I could continue to learn as I instruct is one of my greatest pleasures. Being an entrepreneur affords me the opportunity to also incorporate my creative side into the working equation. It took me a while to figure out how to create a balance between the two things I like most business growth and art. Once I realized this was my chance to write my story, that I had full control over what I wanted to offer my clients, it became clear how I could go about doing it. In actuality, when I opened that door my business began to grow. Clients began to see the multi-facets of my business, and me as an individual. My brand is me, my mind, my spirit intertwined. When you come to me for service, you receive the intuitive nature to discern what your true needs are, as well as how to develop them for future progress.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would take them to the museum district, 3rd Ward and 4th Ward. Most of my best friends are of the same spirit as I am. It’s important for them to see and feel, in order to truly experience a place. That means taking them to the Art Museum of Houston for the latest art exhibit available. We would create our own masterpiece with Drip & Sip hosted by The Cy’ On Collection in the 3rd Ward area. Nightlife for food and entertainment, which has to include dancing, would be at Phil & Derek’s who generally has a Video DJ and now, a Comedy Night. Meals would be a variety of seafood and vegetarian with a stroll down Almeda Rd. where we would find Sunshine’s just off Old Spanish Trail, The Turkey Leg Hut, Green Seed, and a variety of holistic shops to peruse.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
What brought the art and marketing world into being for me was a summer program at the Art Institute of Houston. It was developed with a wide array of creatives in mind and for a week period we were exposed to many mediums of art. It was a well developed program that helped to spark my interest in travel and seeing the art of the world, as well as exposing me to new forms. It was a time where I was encouraged to be expressive and not driven to create a specific piece of artwork. I appreciated that most. Many times I felt boxed in by conventional ways of teaching art, even though I knew I needed to learn the fundamentals. It can be stifling at times to be restrictive when your mind sees vast concepts. My art story is just beginning!
