We had the good fortune of connecting with Jenny Hughes and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jenny, every day, we about how much execution matters, but we think ideas matter as well. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
As a trauma therapist myself, I know how difficult and yet how rewarding this work is. So many trauma therapists either work in private practice, and can feel very isolated, or work in agencies that are not very supportive of the therapists’ self-care needs. I created the BRAVE Trauma Therapist Collective to meet these unmet needs of trauma therapists in a space where community members have a shared understanding of what it’s like to do trauma work.
I wanted community to be a central part of the BRAVE Trauma Therapist Collective because it is through connection that healing really takes place. For so many important reasons, trauma therapists simply can’t talk about their work. I created the Collective to be a space where trauma therapists are supported in sharing what it is like to do trauma work so they can overcome the effects of vicarious trauma and burnout and prevent these things from happening in the future. It is an online community so that it can be accessible to trauma therapists around the world!
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I am so honored to provide support to trauma therapists as they deserve to be cared for too! As a trauma therapist myself, I know first hand the effects of vicarious trauma and burnout. Even though doing trauma therapy with my clients is incredibly rewarding, it is also very emotionally taxing. If I am not intentional in the ways I care for myself, I will easily burnout. I know this happens for other trauma therapists, which is why I created the BRAVE Trauma Therapist Collective. Through the work we do in the Collective, trauma therapists are able to go from feeling drained and demoralized to energized and empowered! I want the world to know how inspirational the trauma therapists are inside of the BRAVE Collective – their energy lights me up and inspires me to do even better each and every day!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
The first place I would take my friend would be the original Lupe’s Tortillas off of Highway 6 – they have the best fajitas and margaritas! I would definitely want to carve out time to go to the museum district one day and then down to Galveston for a well-deserved beach day! I love that I can show visitors the city AND the surf all in one trip!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to dedicate my shoutout to my incredible husband and family. I truly would not be able to be an entrepreneur without his undying support. He helps me reach my goals through his love, compassion, and amazing cooking!
I also want to say thanks to all my biz besties – the incredible women who walk alongside me in the adventure of entrepreneurship, who inspire me every day, and who build me up when I’m feeling discouraged. We can’t do this alone, and I’m so grateful to have an amazing support system in this work!
