We had the good fortune of connecting with JoAnn Mata and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi JoAnn, what’s the most important thing you’ve done for your children?
I became a mom the year after I graduated high school and i didn’t have the opportunity to go to college at that time. The years went by and I didn’t go back to school until 15 years later.
As a parent, I believe one of the most important things I’ve done is go back to school as an adult and continue working toward my goals. I wanted my children to see firsthand that growth doesn’t stop at a certain age, and that hard work, perseverance, and education are powerful tools for building the life you want. My hope is that by watching me push through challenges and stay committed, they’ve learned the value of determination and believing in themselves. It’s hard work sometimes but you keep pushing forward.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
After turning 40, I realized I wanted to change career paths. It was scary stepping into the unknown, and I often asked myself if I was ‘too old’ to chase my dreams. But I told myself to give it a shot. I was determined to find work that I loved—work where I could truly make a difference. Even while I was in school, I knew I had made the right choice.

Becoming an esthetician was only the beginning. It took time for me to realize that the best path for my growth was to go solo and specialize as an acne expert. Nothing fulfills me more than helping clients transform their skin and regain their confidence. Every clear-skin journey I get to be part of reminds me that this is exactly where I’m meant to be. It’s not been easy, but I make it a point to always continue learning so that I can be more informed and give my clients the best of me.

A few lessons I’ve learned along the way is that growth takes patience and consistency, not just for skin, but also in business. I’ve learned to trust the process, stay resilient through challenges, and never stop learning. What I want the world to know about my brand and story is that it comes from a place of passion and personal transformation. I took a leap later in life to follow my dreams, and now I get to help others feel confident in their skin. My business isn’t just about treatments, it’s about giving people hope, support, and results they can be proud of.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend came to visit, I hope it will be during rodeo season. We can catch a great concert as well as fun and delicious foods.
I also love going to Galveston, and we would go eat a burger at “The Spot”.
On a different night, I would like to take her to the food trucks on Edgebrook that have the best authentic Mexican foods.
Personally, I think we will be eating all the time because Houston has such a fantastic variety. We can have different choices every night.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to give a shout out to my family. To my husband and my kids for being my support system. Whether it was giving me time to study, encouraging me when things felt overwhelming, or even picking up takeout for dinner so I could keep going. For letting me practice facials and extractions on them so that I could build confidence. Their love and support has made all the difference.
