We had the good fortune of connecting with Juan Carlos Torres and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Juan Carlos, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I have always believed that while it is true that making a living from art is quite a challenge, and I would say only for the brave, I can also say that there is no greater pleasure than being able to make a living doing what you love, and even more so being paid for it, and that was the starting point when I started and decided to dedicate myself to art, there was no chance for doubt, I just jumped into the pool, whether it had water or not, I would see it later lol
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Since I was a child, art always held a special place in my life, beginning with self-taught drawings and evolving to formal studies in workshops and art schools. My path was not without difficulties: limited resources, lack of support and constant criticism were obstacles that I had to overcome. However, through ingenuity and perseverance, I found creative ways to use available materials, sought support in art communities, and learned to use constructive criticism to improve my work.
The lessons I have learned along the way are invaluable. Resilience is essential; Every rejection and criticism taught me to move forward and improve. The importance of education and constant training showed me that there is always something new to learn and that every experience, good or bad, contributes to my growth as an artist. Additionally, I discovered the power of connections and mutual support within the arts community.
What I want the world to know about me and my brand is that my art is an extension of my essence and my experiences. My work not only seeks to be aesthetically pleasing, but also to provoke reflection and dialogue on relevant social and cultural issues. Each work is an invitation to see the world from a new perspective and to find beauty and meaning in the everyday. My story is a testament to perseverance and passion, and I hope to inspire others to follow their artistic dreams, no matter the obstacles they face.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
From my experience I would say that the city of Houston is an interesting cosmopolitan proposal where different cultures meet, and this is revealed in the number of museums and activities that the city has, the museum district is undoubtedly one of the best for me and those who are interested in art and culture, and how not to spend an afternoon in the downtown enjoying an Astros game at the stadium or visiting one of the themed bars that have a wide offer for visitors.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Without a doubt I believe that life is a long or short path for some, but in the end a PATH, and for this we need to find a meaning, a compass, to find our north, and in it we will always find people who act as a guide or support to continue moving forward, that is how I met Mary Powell, a lady who loved art and had incredible generosity, who lived in Houston; So when I was a little boy who dreamed of being an artist, I remember in Lima-Peru outside my parents’ small antique store, which I attended when I left school, I was painting or trying to do so at that time and there I met Mrs. Mary, who saw “something” in me, and told me something that would change my life forever: “you are so good that your talent doesn’t fit in this small store, you have to go out into the world and conquer it”, so it was that after my first art exhibitions motivated by this, I managed to obtain an invitation to travel to the USA, to exhibit my works and where she and her family welcomed me as another member and I saw art with different eyes, and that later allowed me to meet other people who They opened more and incredible doors for me.
