We had the good fortune of connecting with Julia Abelow and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Julia, what do you attribute your success to?
I truly believe the most important factor behind my success and growth is that I actually care. Each person who walks into COMPLEXION has one hundred percent of my energy and focus so that they can receive the best service. All clients receive custom treatments upon evaluation as skin care is not a “one size fits all”. COMPLEXION brings together the perfect blend of Professional treatments and products with lavish amounts of spa relaxation. I’ll never forget that early in my Aesthetics career my witch of a boss noticed I was spending too much time in the patients rooms getting to know them and checking every last detail of the skin. She told me that I care too much and that would be my down fall……. cue Chris Brown’s “Look at me Now” because I’ve built my whole business off of customer service, connection, customization, and love for the art that is skincare!
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
COMPLEXION is what I like to call “Bellaire’s Modern Pink Fantasy Skincare Spa”. I wanted to create a space like no other that has the perfect amounts of modern, bubbly, and luxury with plenty of places for photo ops! I provide customized Skincare services for every concern using multiple professional brands and the beloved Hydrojelly masks, Dermaplaning, Collagen Induction Therapy, Brow Services including the popular service “Brow Lamination”, Lash Lifts and tints, safe teeth whitening, and sell cbd gummies, cbd bath products, and cbd pet products! I am most excited about my growth as a esthetician and business owner! To be brutally honest, the beauty and skincare industry is filled with some of THE RUDEST people. All my previous jobs were wildly unpleasant and I knew I had to go out on my own, do things my way, and put positivity in professional skincare. I started by continuing my education, I took multiple classes to build more skills and services to provide. For months I planned out every aspect of my business and COMPLEXION was born. I wanted COMPLEXION to be somewhere that everyone, including me, felt comfortable to be themselves. Keep in mind, I opened COMPLEXION at a very risky time post-quarantine. It was a leap of faith, as I was fairly new to houston and didnt know that many people and everyone was afraid of going places due to COVID! Before opening, I advertised on both Facebook and Groupon, which built the foundation of COMPLEXION’s core clients. From there, it was all word of mouth and in only two months I was completely booked solid two weeks in advance! I am now 6 months into my business and proud to announce I am expanding to a store front at the end of April! I know my purpose is to make people feel beautiful in their own skin, the satisfaction in peoples smile when they look in the mirror and see their glowing skin is unparalleled. I know they are about to go in their car and take a thousand selfies and that makes my heart so warm. Was the journey hard? I feel like the only hard part was navigating through the negativity at previous jobs and the voice of doubt in my head saying “you want to go out on your own?? you dont even know anybody!!” or ” are you sure its your time to be a boss??” LITERALLY IGNORE THAT DEVIL ON YOUR SHOULDER! FIGHT FOR YOUR POTENTIAL, BABY! If you want it bad enough, you will work and find ways to get clients in front of you! I want people to know that my story is still continuing, COMPLEXIONS brand will continue to grow and create warmth for many many years.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
oh, I love this question. I LIVE for ALL Drag Shows! the Sass, the Style, The Confidence!!! it’s everything! Find me at Hamburger Mary’s with the largest smile and mojito!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are way too many people who deserve a Shoutout for the support and encouragement of being a business woman in the Beauty World! First and foremost, I dedicate everything I do to my sweet dad who passed away in 2014. He was a Rock and Roll Star who taught me humor, perseverance, and major confidence that has made me the woman he would be proud of today. Second, My biggest fans, My mother Rachelle and Boyfriend Solomon. They calm me down at every bump in the road, Keep a smile on my face, Push me to be the best version of Julia and provide free labor! Lastly, SHOUTOUT to Adriel Thurston, who recommended me to be interviewed and my friends at Method Pilates studio who share my posts, believe in my services, and refer the loveliest clients!
