We had the good fortune of connecting with Kalicia Rolsal and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kalicia, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I pursued an artistic/creative career because it was always something that my heart was telling me to do. From as far back as I can remember I was always creating something, and I just couldn’t imagine doing anything else!

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I work on a wide range of projects, but most of my art is nature inspired. I have a beautiful patio garden and a pet snail that I draw most of my inspiration from. I am most excited about getting more of my art out into the world, it’s taken a back seat at times, but I feel like it’s time to really showcase what I can do. I try to stay positive and keep pushing forward so I can continue my creative journey. One of the lessons and also challenges that I’ve overcome along the way has been blocking out what others have to say. Everyone will have an opinion on what you’re supposed to do, but you have to do what you know is best for yourself. I want the world to know that I’m not holding back, be prepared for some amazing work! My work is something that feels good to me and I know it’ll make others feel the same.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
My itinerary would mostly consist of lots of food and great visuals. Some of my favorite food spots are Cyclone Anaya’s for brunch and of course mimosas, Kolache Bar, Flip’n Patties, Sam’s Burgers, RA Sushi, The Rouxpour, and Harold’s Chicken & Shrimp. And you can forget the dessert! We would definitely check out The Chocolate Bar, SWEET, Tiff’s Treats, and SmallCakes. As far as places to go, it’s only right if we stop by Graffiti Park and Tinsley Park to really see the skyline. We would also check out the museum district, McGovern Centennial Gardens, Dairy Ashford Roller Rink on a Thursday night, and Seismique for some great photo opportunities. I’d also make sure to plan this trip around the time of the Art Car Parade, this has been one of my favorite things to do in the city.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to thank my sisters, Keyerra Rolsal and Kiandra Rolsal. They both have been very supportive with all of the creative projects that I’ve worked on. They both respect that I’m a free spirit and express my self in completely different ways than they do and they are fully supportive and encouraging of that.
