We had the good fortune of connecting with Karla Modesto and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Karla, Let’s talk about principles and values – what matters to you most?
Effective creativity. I’m naturally enthusiastic and think outside the box, however I have a huge pragmatic streak in me. I love creative ideas but I value the ones that will work. As an entrepreneur, your ideas and products need to make sense to your customer.Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
The flower bug hit me about a year and a half ago when I started buying flowers from Trader Joe’s. They were inexpensive but beautiful. I became obsessed with experimenting with the different varieties and the structural arrangements I could make with them. I started following a some flower artists in IG and wanted to figure out the mechanics and techniques they used to make these interesting forms with flowers. That lead to the rabbit hole of YouTube learning and free online workshops. I loved this autodidactic way of learning! I started taking flower arrangement orders as a side gig. When I lost my 9-5 job due to Covid, I went full-fledged into the flowers. Scariest and best decision I’ve ever made. Most days I don’t know what I’m doing, but what I know is that I love it. Every day is an opportunity to “perfect” my craft and to be inspired. I feel like I’m living a full life now. My arrangements are eclectic, funky, and structured. They are an extension of my personality and I believe that’s what makes them unique.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I actually had some of my besties come visit me from New York once and stay a week. Honestly, we just hung out at Better Luck Tomorrow in The Heights, ate Tex Mex at El Tiempo, indulged in a couple of nights at The St. Regis Hotel, and went vintage shopping at The Cottage Shop. Pretty sure we did karaoke at Spotlight too. Houston has so much to offer but it’s the company that makes any place worthwhile. The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I have the most supportive family, friends, and boyfriend. For the sake of this interview, I won’t bore the reader with all their names. However, I will say that my entrepreneurial spirit was heavily influenced by authors Seth Godin and James Altucher. Both of them are marketing and creative geniuses and their books and podcasts have been helpful resources for me.
