We had the good fortune of connecting with Kayla Blackwell and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kayla, do you have a favorite quote or affirmation?
“Inhale the future, exhale the past” A lot of times I feel people focus on the past and the hardships that have been through, they focus on the way they were treated and the things others may have said about them, holding them back from a bright future that they deserve, I was once one of those people, as I’ve gotten older I’ve learned that doing what makes you happy and just purely being who you are is amazing and enough, you will touch the people you are supposed to by just being yourself! Every day we must focus on the present moment and the future we are building for ourselves. Moving from my home town to Houston I left a lot of amazing clients behind and my friends and family, but I also left behind heart break, pain and the bad memories associated. Houston is our future and we couldn’t be more thankful to be here with you guys!
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I love body piercing, it gives me the opportunity to make someone feel good about themselves and regain control over a part of their body they may have not been so confident about before. What sets us apart is we are not in it for the money, we will tell you if you don’t have proper anatomy for the piercing you want, we try to taper exsisting piercings to see if they are still open before just repiercing them causing them to have to reheal something that could have been saved! We also want to know your goals and plans with your piercing for the future so we can make sure to pick proper placement. Finally we educate you on healing and are here for you during the entire healing time, even after we love seeing fully healed piercings and decorating them with beautiful jewelry! My journey in the piercing industry started in 2014 with nostril screws and a very loose guide into body mods, in 2016 I learned about the association of professional piercers and quickly went to conference to further my education and gain understanding about my trait, It opened my eyes on wound healing dynamics, needle theory and so much more! Since then I went to conference in 2018 and will be joining them again next year. We plan on becoming an APP (association of professional piercers) studio . Since we just opened we are taking our time before submitting our video of acceptance to them! Becoming a piercer was not easy, everyone has their own experiences in their beginning times, my mentor was a very old school tattooer that didn’t really like piercing he just did them, so my confidence in 2014 and 2015 wasn’t the highest and a lot of times I was very nervous because someone was trusting me to do a good job with their body, as the years have progressed I couldn’t be more thankful for the fear and the lessons I’ve had to learn, they have brought me to where I am today! When you really want to do something regardless of how hard it may seem just stay true to what you want and keep pushing and fighting to become the best you can be, every day is a new day with new experiences and there is something to be learned from every encounter and every experience put in front of you, I have learned to not sweat the small stuff, a lot of times what someone says about you, says more about them then it does about you! Our brand is full of love hard work and passion, we are here to deliver piercings you can be proud of in a calm encouraging environment welcome to any and everyone that finds themselves in our studio, we are down to earth and just regular people providing a service we love to you! I recently started mounting butterflies, moths, spiders and insects in shadow boxes etc. I love the earth it’s pure and so beautiful, I find it’s a peaceful was to pass my free time, I also started selling them in the studio:)
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend came in I would most definitely take her to the seismique museum, it’s an interactive museum and so cool! We would also visit the butterfly exibit at the science museum, they have the cutest bird eating spider in there! I would bring her here to the Larry and laneys soul food, so far it’s my favorite place I have found, we haven’t been doing to much since we came to houston as we were focusing on opening the studio! We would definitely spend a day at the beach and I would take her to the Buffalo bayou trail to do some long boarding for sure!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I got my start as a piercer at Fugis tattoo shop, that’s the only shop I have ever worked at till I opened the studio here in houston, they gave me the opportunity in 2014 and I couldn’t be more thankful! Mr.Fugi started tattooing in the 70’s out of biker bars Etc. Before there were ever any laws on tattooing and well before it ever became main stream, it was bikers and sailors mainly, he was the 7th licensed tattoo shop in the state of Texas! I have so much love for them and the opportunity they gave me!
