We had the good fortune of connecting with Kayla Trammell and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kayla, is there a quote or affirmation that’s meaningful to you?
Something I started saying when I began my textured art journey back in October 2022 is – “Life is hard, choose art.” This came after a hiatus of almost 10 years from all things art-related. I am not a typical work-for-yourself artist. I still have a career requiring full-time hours, which doesn’t leave much time to do the things that bring joy. Before taking several years off, I enjoyed doing photography, digital design work, and custom hand-painted letters that matched nursery or bedroom decor in children’s rooms. However, a few years into this, I decided to return to work and found myself pushing off all my creative outlets. My time at home after work was spent with family or tending to errands and things around the house, leaving little to no time for creativity. Additionally, there was very little brain capacity to fit in any creativity. Just the thought of doing anything outside of my normal routine was purely exhausting. I finally found myself yearning for something of my own that would bring me joy and that is mine and mine alone. So I went out and bought the supplies I needed to start experimenting with textured art. This has now led to more artistic avenues and opportunities to work with businesses and individuals here local to Houston. I may not have as much time as I would like to do my art, but I have made it a personal goal to stay as consistent as I can, while also taking the necessary breaks. All this to say, life can get hard and it is so easy to get wrapped up in the hustle and bustle, but it is necessary to take time away to do the things that bring you joy.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I previously mentioned that I am a part-time artist, which leaves little time to experiment.

With that being said, I put a lot of pressure on myself when I create artwork, to make sure each piece is made to perfection. But we all know art is not about perfection…it is about expression, therapy, aesthetics and so much more.

With time, I have had to overcome my doubt and just allow the creativity to flow and not be so critical toward myself and my work.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My best friend, Amy, without a doubt! She has been a huge supporter in my life and my mental health journey. She has always offered advice or guidance about balance, boundaries, or when I start to doubt myself.
