We had the good fortune of connecting with Kelly Peyton and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kelly, maybe we can start at the very start – the idea – how did you come up with the idea for your business?
Katy Counseling was born from a hard place. For 10 years I had served the children, teens and families of Katy and taught and trained therapists yet continued to see both struggling with the limitations insurance companies put on treatment. I began to offer extended sessions and additional services not covered by insurance and my clients started to get better faster! I realized a model where people could take control of their mental health instead of insurance companies was needed! Likewise, good therapists needed a stable place to work, learn and grow without suffering burnout. Unfortunately this model did not fit within my existing company so I decided to start Katy Counseling to meet the need, and provide new options for the community.
What should our readers know about your business?
Katy Counseling aims to provide collaborative care with our clients. This means clients will know exactly what treatment options they have and how they can reach their goals. I can’t tell you how many times I have heard people say they have been in therapy for years and had no idea what their treatment plan was or that all they did was talk! Likewise, I have had many people desperate for help turned away from other places due to court involvement, privacy issues or other needs that are complicated by insurance. Our model allows us to serve the needs of these individuals without compromising care, privacy, or other needs. We also get to hire great therapists and train them in some of the best techniques backed by research!
Having come from a primarily insurance based model, I have had to learn quickly! I learned counselors were absolutely starving to work at a center like this which means I have had to turn down some amazing therapists! I have also learned when people are getting better faster, that means we have to work harder to get our message out to keep those great therapists working. It has always been a balance, but it happens much faster here!
What I hope people will know about Katy Counseling is that we are passionate about all the individuals we work with whether they are children, teens, adults, couples or our therapists!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Hands down I would take them to two of my favorite restaurants, Davinci’s Italian, a tiny little gem around the corner from my house. I’ve eaten all over Italy and can say, it’s better than most of the places I ate there! I’d also take them into town to see Taste of Texas to get an amazing meal, service and some great Texas history in every corner! If the weather was nice, I would love to stop at Top Golf for an afternoon of fun and perhaps even take some time at the Alternate Reality Escape Rooms in Katy. I do love a good game! We could also pop into Scholars and Scoundrels for a drink and some trivia.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to thank Ochs Labs for their tremendous work with LENS neurofeedback that is changing lives in our area, EMDRIA and The Rosenzweig Center for Rapid Recovery for teaching rapid trauma recovery models and intensive therapy formats that have transformed the way I work. And locally, a huge thank you to Jason Drake of Katy Teen and Family Therapy for helping me better understand the needs of a fully private pay practice. I am also grateful to my colleagues all across Houston who have lived on me and supported me during this transition.
