We had the good fortune of connecting with Kelly Thomas and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kelly, what do you attribute your success to?
The most important factor behind the success of Designed by Kelly is the one-to-one relationships we build with each of our clients. We believe that providing direct access to us for questions, assistance, and support throughout the entire design process makes a meaningful difference in our clients’ experience. Instead of spending money on traditional marketing, we choose to invest in our clients by giving back through personalized services tailored to their unique needs. This dedication has earned us a 5-star rating and the honor of being voted Business of the Year by our clients through Alignable. Our business thrives on referrals, with clients recommending us because they appreciate the care, commitment, and attention we bring to every project. This approach allows us to maintain strong relationships and continue to grow our business through the trust and satisfaction of those we serve.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Designed by Kelly began in May 2019, but my passion for design started long before that. Back in 2006, I had a Home Staging/Redesign business, and later transitioned into graphic design while serving as the Director of Communications for a large church in Houston for eight years. However, life took an unexpected turn in November 2017 when I suddenly lost my husband and became a widowed mom of four. A few months later, I left my job to be with my children as they needed me most.
Once our family found its new normal, my father and a close friend encouraged me to follow my passion for design and start my own business. Designed by Kelly was born, allowing me to continue doing what I love while being there for my children. We recently celebrated our five-year anniversary, and I am proud to say that Designed by Kelly is stronger than ever! I run the business with my oldest daughter, as a Mother-Daughter Design Duo, we’ve helped hundreds of small businesses and nonprofits tell their unique stories through branding, web design, and more.
What sets us apart is twofold: first, affordability. From day one, I was committed to making professional design accessible to everyone, regardless of budget. Second, we invest deeply in getting to know our clients. I ask questions, meet with you in person or via Zoom, analyze your social media, and even visit your place of business. For churches, I may attend a worship service to fully understand your story. You can’t market to a client’s target audience without truly knowing the client.
From the first day of the design process, you’re involved, and your feedback is always welcome. And best of all, once you become a client, you’re a client for life—I’m just a phone call away whenever you need advice or have a question. We also offer a free 30-minute consultation so anyone can get to know us better.
Like any small business, we’ve faced challenges, but those bumps in the road have only helped us grow. I’m proud of how we’ve evolved to meet our clients’ needs and how we’ve expanded our services over time. We’ve even had the chance to appear on a TV Talk Show and a Radio Show, which were incredible experiences. We are also excited to launch a new sister business this month called Buzzworthy Tools – Marketing made easy for every brand. It is a monthly membership site with exclusive, 100% customizable Canva templates and stress-free content materials. Our clients have been asking for an affordable solution for social media and editable templates. So we have hundreds to choose from and more added every month.
I want the world to know that Designed by Kelly is more than just a business—we are a personal, affordable, and dedicated partner in your success.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend were visiting for the weekend, I’d plan a relaxing but fun itinerary that reflects my love for quiet, cozy spots and hidden gems in North Houston. We’d start our mornings with a visit to a local coffee shop, where we can enjoy a great cup of coffee and catch up. From there, we’d head to a charming bookstore or a small independent shop, where we could get lost among the shelves for hours.
In the afternoons, we’d indulge in some antique and thrift shopping. North Houston has some fantastic spots like Old Town Spring and The Antique Gallery of Houston. These places are perfect for discovering unique treasures, vintage finds, and items with a bit of history. We’d explore these local favorites and probably spend a good chunk of time hunting for the perfect piece.
In the evenings, we might unwind with a quiet dinner at a locally-owned restaurant—someplace with a cozy, laid-back atmosphere where you can savor a great meal without all the noise. For me, the best time spent with a friend is all about enjoying the simple things—good coffee, great books, and the thrill of finding that perfect antique or thrifted item.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to dedicate my shoutout to a few important people who have been instrumental in my journey. First, my father, Joel Fischer, who encouraged me to start this business. He reminded me of my gifts and talents, pushing me to use them to their fullest potential. His belief in me was the spark that got Designed by Kelly off the ground. Second, I want to recognize my friend Bryant Lee, Pastor of Higher Expectations Church, who was not only my first client but has been a tremendous source of ongoing support and referrals. His faith in my work helped build the foundation for my business, and his encouragement has continued to push me forward. Third, I would like to recognize my oldest daughter, Cara Williams, who runs the business with me day in and day out. I couldn’t do it without her assistance and support!
