Meet Kennedy Nelms | MUA and Jack of All Trades

We had the good fortune of connecting with Kennedy Nelms and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kennedy, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I pursued this type of career because I’ve always been a more creative person. I love all types of artistic expression and gravitated the most towards makeup artistry. Being able to do art on another person’s face is one of the best feelings to me.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I know how to do many different styles of makeup, so I can truly cater to all types of people, but what I really want to focus on and am best at is more artistic styles of makeup. I’m just starting out professionally, but I’m just proud of myself for taking this leap at all, as it was not easy to get here. I just want to be able to meet people from all different walks of life and get to do their makeup, and I keep my prices low to give so many more people the chance to indulge in a “luxury” service.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
During a week long visit, I’d definitely take them to both The Flying Biscuit and Sweet Paris for brunch. The Flying Biscuit has the best shrimp and grits I’ve tasted so far, and Sweet Paris has some really good savory crepes. I’d also take them to eat at Medium Rare for dinner—the steak frites is DELICIOUS and your order comes with seconds. For entertainment, Cidercade is always a good place to hit up, and both the Galleria and Deerbrook mall are fun to hang out at. The Galleria has cute self photo studio and Deerbrook has a plushie arcade that’s really fun!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
The people who deserve the most recognition in my journey are 3 important people in my life. Those people are my mother, my older brother, and my best friend, Brooklynn. My mom has supported me in every endeavor I’ve ever pursued, and she’s the reason why I even pursued anything. She is an entrepreneur and has been my entire life, so she’s my inspiration. My older brother bought me my first real makeup and tools, so he was the backbone of my start to makeup when I was in middle school, and I still have those makeup palettes till this day. Brooklynn was the first—and for a long time, the ONLY—face I ever did makeup on. She allowed me to experiment and grow my skills and she continues to do so now.
