We had the good fortune of connecting with Maite Candina Bradford and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Maite Candina, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Without challenging risk I wouldn’t be here talking with you today. Early in my business life, my goal was to play it safe after achieving my initial degree, but finding that with Faith risk became a simple part of my life in paving my own path. I needed the challenge to create and become what I envisioned. It has only been after this long journey of dedication and perseverance that a huge satisfaction becomes a reality. I’ve learned to enjoy every step, sales order, happy customer, and the many friendships because that is where I feel the success lies. It’s the drive of my ability to handle the world of entrepreneurship.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Working in the corporate world for many years, specifically in the extremely structural engineering industry, it became monotonous, and I needed a change. In my 40s I set a plan for a new career, a journey that would teach my kids it’s never too late for new beginnings. Though you may think a career of a Fashion Designer would be a complete opposite undertaking, they both are a solution driven process. Instead of designing Oil and Gas facilities, I was planning the confectioning of a garment, from inspiration to final product. This is what fascinates and drives me. I believe the practical and the artistic sides in my brain work together to create pieces I love, and most importantly, inspire my message.
The Fashion Industry is extremely aggressive with brutal competition, so in order to develop a concept that would last it required a close connection with a client that valued that uniqueness, inspiration, custom made, limited edition, and locally designed pieces. Voilá, MAITETXU was born. Our creations are dedicated to a woman that loves unique pieces with an impact, but it is the message behind the pieces, the inspiring process through to the final product in every garment that connects with her. It is that connection with my clients that I cherish the most.
Faith, For Never Shall I Fear, is our family motto. My Faith to trust God and trust my work with the force that inspires me is what keeps me rooted to this entrepreneurial dream. In this journey, if you ask me what I want people to remember about me: It was never about the clothes, they were the vehicle to share my message.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My oasis during these last two years has been Memorial Park, so a walk or a run there would be a must, with an mandatory acai bowl afterwards.
Love the view at the JPMorgan Chase Tower to view the whole city.
The Museum District is fascinating, specially my favorite the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, that has free entrance on Thursdays
Biking through the Buffalo Bayou Park
For an impressive visit, the Menil Collection is worth the time .
And the FOOD!! so many amazing restaurants offering food from all over the world. We love tasting new places, and it’s hard to narrow it down because you hardly can go wrong in this city.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My crazies! The tribe under my roof and far away that I adore and are my loudest hurrahs. It is through them that I shine my best light.
And to my sisters from other mothers, friends from life, my tiger managers. You know who you are.
