We had the good fortune of connecting with Meredith Johns and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Meredith, we’d love to hear what makes you happy.
Making art makes me happy. Whether it’s the perfect blend on a beauty makeup or a super complicated character build with prosthetics, I’m happiest when I’m creating art. I love how the magic of makeup can transform things. I love to sculpt and create prosthetics. Fabrication of costumes and weapons and integrating LEDs, animatronics and things like 3D printing make my heart sing. I’m living the dream and creating art every day.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a makeup and special effects makeup artist and co-owner of Hawgfly Productions, Inc. I grew up in a family of artists painting and sculpting so I’ve basically been creating art from as early as I could hold a brush or pencil. I got a degree in advertising from Texas State University, but after just a few months in graphic design I realized that the makeup and film worlds were where I was really meant to be. I volunteered on a zombie movie about 18 years ago and the rest was history. I met business partner Carolyn O’Hara and we started Hawgfly shortly after. If anyone every says owning a business is easy, then they’re lying. It’s one of the hardest, yet most rewarding experiences you could ever go through. There are so many challenges and particularly in our industry you have to keep adapting to new technologies, formats, demands and figure out how to keep the doors open and the business growing through it all. I wouldn’t trade it for the world, but it’s definitely not easy. We have consistently maintained the philosophy that it’s our job to bring ideas to life. We strive to be on the forefront of all the new technologies in our industry. The secret to success is to keep learning.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
That’s a hard one! I looove food and adventure! New Fortune for dim sum and their amazing salt and pepper shrimp. Korea House, Madam Mams, Honestly I love so many… Veracruz Tacos and Radio Coffee bar are fantastic. Flix Brewhouse, Alamo Drafthouse, Pinballz arcade (amazing!), Escapology escape room, hiking the green belt

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I couldn’t do anything without the support of my Hawgfly Productions crew and business partner Carolyn O’Hara. I’m inspired by so many artists that it would be difficult to list them all. The Godfather of FX makeup, Dick Smith, is the mentor that started me in the industry and his teachings and legendary work still live on despite his passing.
