We had the good fortune of connecting with Michelle Corder and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Michelle, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Knowing how hard it is to work full-time and be a single parent, I wanted to share with other mothers and women what has helped me to find more joy and peace in my daily life. Years ago I found myself as a single parent with a toddler. While working full-time, dealing with the stressors of daily life and trying to be the calm, present mother I had dreamed of being, I found myself frustrated and exhausted. I needed to make a change, but I wasn’t sure exactly what that change was. I stumbled upon a Crystal Singing Bowl class and realized how different I felt after the class. I was peaceful and calm instead of exhausted and overwhelmed. I bought 3 Crystal Singing Bowls and started researching and learning as much as I could about the healing impacts of Sound. Playing the Crystal Singing Bowls on a daily basis allowed me to reconnect to an inner stillness. I was able to be not only be the patient, caring mother I had envisioned, but I also found a new energy and excitement about life. I felt not only a desire, but an obligation to help other mothers and women like me. I wanted to share the amazing benefits I personally experienced from Sound, so I decided to create my company, Kalini Wave. I became passionate about helping women find that inner calm and stillness. I want to help women finally be able to breath again.
What should our readers know about your business?
I love grabbing a morning coffee at Siphon Coffee and sitting on the oversized leather chairs and enjoying a breakfast taco. Common Bond Bakery is also a great place for coffee and beautiful pastries. Ramen Tatsu-Ya is a tasty lunch spot if you are craving Japanese food. The noodles are delicious and comforting at the same time. I am also a big fan of Kata Robata for fresh sushi. The fish is fresh and the dishes are beautifully prepared. Grabbing some Indian dinner at Pondicheri is also a must. The food is spicy and the cocktails are refreshing. If you are in the mood for Italian food, North Italia has amazing homemade pastas and pizzas. The atmosphere is fun and vibrant. If you want to grab a drink in the evening and the weather is nice, I love relaxing in the hammocks at Axelrad Beer Garden. It’s a great place to listen to live music and chill. I also like the ambiance at Anvil Bar and Refuge for a late night drink. In terms of activities, checking out The Menil Collection and park would definitely be on the list. The art is diverse and I love the peaceful neighborhood. Going for a hike or bike ride at Memorial Park is a fun way to escape the city and enjoy some nature. I am a huge fan of rock climbing and bouldering, so if you are looking to work up a sweat spend some time climbing at Momentum Indoor Climbing Silver Street. It’s fun, engaging and hard work, plus the other climbers are friendly and helpful. Discovery Green always has a variety of activities. They have ice skating in winter, roller skating in spring and movies in the summer, not to mention yoga, tai chi and other fitness classes each week. A relaxing day trip to Galveston for some sun and sand is always a good idea.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
When friends visit there is a lot of talking, eating, talking, drinking, talking, outdoor adventure and more talking. I love grabbing a morning coffee at Siphon Coffee and sitting on the oversized leather chairs and couches and chatting. They also have delicious breakfast tacos. If we are looking for a more lively environment, Common Bond Bakery has great coffee and beautiful pastries. For lunch some Japanese food at Ramen Tatsu-Ya. The noodles are delicious and comforting at the same time. I am also a big fan of Kata Robata for fresh sushi. The restaurant is cosy and the dishes are beautifully prepared. A relaxing day trip to Galveston for some sun, surf and sand is a good idea to end out the week. Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I wouldn’t have had the courage or the reason to start my own company if it wasn’t for my daughter. She has been my greatest teacher over the past seven years. She has shown me what forgiveness looks like and what unconditional love feels like. Unbeknownst to her, she has given me the opportunity to recognize an inner strength that I didn’t think was possible. I have grown more as a woman and a businesswoman because of her resilience and endless spirit.
