We had the good fortune of connecting with Alicia Beatrice and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Alicia, as a parent, what do you feel is the most meaningful thing you’ve done for them?
Taking responsibility for my personal growth and healing has been the most important thing I’ve done as a parent. I don’t use excuses about what I do not know or what knowledge was not passed on to me as a child. We seek knowledge as a family and as their parent it is my honor and commitment to nurture them the best I can. It is an ongoing journey actively participating in my own evolution. This is the legacy I am building for my children. We learn and grow together as a family and talk about things related to life and business, of course, as developmentally appropriate as possible.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
It’s been a journey but I’m proud of my evolution. After experiencing so many losses, facing mental health challenges and being shunned from a church I belonged to in the past, it was difficult finding a place I could be my full self and get the love and support I need while I recovered. When I made the commitment to heal, I didn’t know what I was signing up for. I had to sit down and have difficult conversations with myself about what was not working in my life and set intentions for who I wanted to become. Therapy and self care have become apart of my routine. The rewards have been greater than the setbacks. I’ve come full circle to embrace my story and not being ashamed of who I am or what I had to overcome. I’ve let go of people, places and things that do not honor or serve me as a human being on a spiritual journey. It has evolved into becoming a creative entrepreneur, author of 3 books, licensed clinical social worker and putting myself out there as a soulful artist. Alicia Beatrice is a resilient, Afro-Latinx woman born and raised in Houston, Texas and an emerging artist.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I can appreciate relaxing at home from time to time. If a good friend were visiting me, we’d enjoy breakfast at home or a brunch and dinner. Some of the most interested places include seeing the local culture where ever you visit. The small family owned businesses that have been around for years or seeing the new places that come into the neighborhood. Museums, art, and outdoor sports are also the best go to places (of course, social distanced).

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
First, I give all honor and glory to God for being faithful. There have been quite a few people that have supported me along the way; however, one that has made a big impact on my journey of personal growth is Dr. Venus Opal Reese. Her integrity, love and authenticity helped me during my personal journey of healing.
