We had the good fortune of connecting with My’key Iso and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi My’key, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I always had a way in expressing myself as a child. I fell in love with music and wanted to be able to create my own music by telling my stories. I was very talkative but had problems expressing my emotions to others when talking. I felt music was that outlet for me. Whatever I’d go through I’d talk about it in a song and it’s been the best way to express myself.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m Nigerian and was born in Houston so I grew up on Nigerian jazz artist and jammed Houston rap. When I began making music I always searched for a Jazz sound because that was my root. I’ve grown so much since then but I feel that is something that separates me from a lot of artists today. My story is quite unique and I try to blend both of worlds together. It was often a challenge because I had to learn who I was as an artist. I learned that in this life and in like any profession you will get knocked down but if you believe in yourself you will get back up and keep going. I want to invoke love and meaning in life. We were all put in this world to be great and I want people to be able to inspire and change lives one song at a time.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Well since COVID happened, I know a lot of things changed in the city. I would say that Gumbo Jam on Sunday’s, Henke & Pilot Tuesday’s are two of the best open mic spots in Houston. I’m an introvert so it takes a lot for me to leave the house and those two places exceeds that. I’m a breakfast type of person so I love Jupiter in sugarland. The food there is amazing.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to shout out a lot of my family and friends that’s been on this journey with me. It’s never easy but there support means a lot. Raven, Tiki, Kuam, Jazz, Judy, Lee-Lonn, Danny Watts and so many more. I appreciate them for real because they keep me level headed.
