We had the good fortune of connecting with Cheray Gilkes and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Cheray, what do you think makes you most happy? Why?
My happiest moments are when I am simply living in the moment and engaging in activities that I love! Being outdoors, makeup artistry, modeling, spending time with my daughter, listening to podcasts.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a Makeup Artist, however, I do not limit myself to that title, I am a creator. I Model, I write poetry, I paint, I create & edit youtube videos, I put together photoshoot concepts and photograph them, and I love interior designing. Basically, anything that allows me to express my inner ideas, I am instantly drawn to. I’d have to say that what I’m most proud of is that I am self-taught. Everything I’ve accomplished art-wise, I’ve either inherited or taught myself through youtube lol.
I got where I am today through practice, confidence, and faith. As long as you are confident in whatever it is you choose, you’ll go far. Was it easy? Yes and No. Yes because when you truly enjoy what you do it does not feel like work however I have not reached my ultimate goal career-wise.. in due timing, it shall happen!
The number one lesson I’ve learned is that what is meant for you will not pass you. This means that if you are going up for let’s say a specific position and the job/manager decides to choose someone else, this does not mean you are less qualified or not a “good fit” it just simply means it was not for you, and trust me, there is always something better right around the corner.
What I want the world to know about my brand or my story is that you can do it alone. Everyone has a purpose and a passion, no matter what is thrown at you, it is always to help build you, help you become more adaptable, never to deter or defeat you.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My all-time favorite food spots in Houston are Island flavors (Caribbean Food), Jinya (Japanese dining), and the Burganic Hub (for any burger you can imagine). My favorite hang-out spots are Lost & Found, Herman Park, or Axel Rad. Oh! also I would go to Present Company, I haven’t been, but it is definitely on my list! For drinks, I love tapioca so pretty much any Boba tea place, but I recommend the “Mango Madness” at OH My Tea! Other places I’d suggest visiting are, egg haus, the Seismique museum, the Sunset roof top Lounge, and the Holman draft Hall. I have a huge list in my notes of places I’m just waiting to visit!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My shoutout would definitely go to my mother and sister. They are the people that I owe my independence, stamina, and perseverance to. They’ve always made sure that I have exactly what I need and want without any hesitance. Both of them play very prominent roles in my life and always remain 5 steps ahead, I love them.
