We had the good fortune of connecting with Osiris May and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Osiris, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
First I want to say thank you guys for the Interview.
When I first started, all I wanted to do was shoot. It didn’t matter what or when. I just wanted to capture anything and everything at the moment. I will admit it consumed almost every aspect of my life. I would be at dinner with the wife, kids and would snap pics of everything on the table including the dessert lol. Nobody could eat before I snapped what I thought was the perfect shot. After a short time the wife shut it down and would give me the side eye if I thought about taking out my camera. The same applied when we went on vacations.
As time went on I quickly learned that enjoying the moment with family was most important. The shot will always be there. I’m not saying I didn’t get the shots I wanted, I just did it a little bit differently like getting up earlier, going alone or even going after while the family was sleeping.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
For me it’s all about the lighting. I used to be a natural light shooter until I discovered strobe lighting. I saw a guy on Instagram who had been following me for a while and posted a photo that blew me away. I asked how he did it and we literally talked everyday about photography. Years later we still talk even though he is now a big time tik tok influencer and he’s funny as hell. He is one of the guys I still look up to when it comes to lighting.
If anything sets me apart it’s the fact that I started out with nothing but natural light and trash lenses. You have to get real creative when you have to work with what you have or can afford. I’ve learned that limitations will make you work harder to change your situation if you want it bad enough. When I discovered shooting with strobes I wanted to learn to control the light and use strobes to enhance my work and not necessarily take over it.
I’m excited about the possibilities I’m creating for my future with my photography and videography. I actually wanted to be a film director growing up but gravitated more towards learning photography. In the past few years I’ve done more music videos and filmed a few weddings. I hope to do a few documentaries as well.
Where I’m at today professionally has been a hard road, the long nights, dealing with some needy clients and juggling home life hasn’t at all been easy but it has been worth every second. Looking back there are things I wish I would’ve done differently, mostly buying things I never used was a huge problem. You will learn quickly photography is expensive if it’s a hobby. I’m fortunate to do this full time.
If there is anything I want the world to know is this is my life. I eat, sleep and think about creating every second I can. I’m not just taking pictures just to take pictures anymore. I want to create memories that people can enjoy well after I’m gone.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Wow, I am a serious homebody so that’s a tough one. My first thought would be New Orleans. I don’t think I’ve been anywhere for an entire week lol so 3 days would be my max lol. But when I’m in New Orleans it’s a must to check out Café Du Monde for some of the best beignets ever.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Definitely my family. They’ve all had to put up with my clicking every second of the day and every chance I could snap a pic.
