We had the good fortune of connecting with Perishia Jones and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Perishia, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I am from a small town called Navasota, Texas where I made my mark as a young athlete at the local schools. I grew up around a very loving and supportive family that made church a requirement as God is the basis for everything that we do. While residing there, I found a love for music and sang in a group called Kids of Praise that consisted of my two older brothers. In 2005, at the age of 15, I founded a group called Teens in Christ, known presently as the award winning and multi nominated group Unity of Navasota. Prior to being placed on the front line to sing, I developed a unique trademark as the group’s drummer (a rare sight in the aforementioned genre). Though I enjoy singing Traditional Gospel (quartet) particularly alongside Unity of Navasota, Praise and Worship remains my focus and specialization. While gracing various churches with my singing ministry and being the Worship leader for Fresh Start Ministries Brazos Valley, I have also managed to be the recipient of a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree. Both are valuable tools that I use as a middle school Special Education teacher. Of all the offices held, I most value being a devoted wife to my producer and engineer Patrick Jones and a loving mother to my son Saint Patrick Jones.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I received my Master of Education degree April 25, 2020 during a pandemic (Covid-19) while being a new wife to Patrick “Peigh” Jones, giving birth to my first child, Saint Patrick Jones on April 17, 2020 and being a full-time worship leader at Fresh Start Ministries Brazos Valley under the leadership of my parents, Pastors Perry & Carolyn Harris. I literally was in labor for 16 hours, making sure I still uploaded tutorial videos so that my students wouldn’t lack. On October 16, 2020, I released my first single as a solo artist entitled Thank You. From that release, I have been blessed to participate on various platforms both in person and virtually. Every time I am able to share my gift from God, I am blessed. Today I still teach and I do most of my creative artistry work from College Station, Tx under my husband’s label, Work Son Music. I credit my traveling abroad as the source from which I glean my creative style and process. I sing because it soothes me and leads me into the presence of God (a place I love to be). Though I enjoy singing Traditional Gospel (quartet) particularly alongside Unity of Navasota, Praise and Worship remains my focus and specialization. My journey has definitely not been easy, I’ve dealt with criticism, depression, and low self-esteem along the way. Always worried what others thought of me. I advise young women to seek help if needed in any aspect of their lives and always remember that it is okay to not be okay. Everyday won’t be the best but dwell on the highs, see the good in things. I may not have gotten the job I wanted at the moment, but I have a job, I like for people to be optimistic.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We would definitely go to Century Square. It has everything in one place, food, fun, and adventure; That’s only if we have to stay in College Station. However, if I had to choose, we would make the hour drive to Houston to the Galleria area where everything I love is like Moxie’s, The Westin, and the Escape Room.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My parents Perry and Carolyn Harris; Pastors of Fresh Start Ministries Brazos Valley and my Husband Patrick Jones; Insurance Broker, Producer, Photographer, Guitarist!
