Meet Philip Mercado | Life Insurance Agent, General Contractor, Small Business Owner

We had the good fortune of connecting with Philip Mercado and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Philip, what’s your definition for success?
Success is alignment before achievement. Success shows up in several ways, such as skills that get easier to deploy, a reputation that works for you while you sleep, health that expands your time horizon, and judgment that improves under pressure. Success includes autonomy, not just income. Simply, success is building a life where your effort compounds, your values stay intact, and your future has more options than your present.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My work is centered around doing honest, consistent work and building systems that make quality repeatable. I run an independent operation where reliability, efficiency, and attention to detail matter more than shortcuts or flash. What sets me apart is that I treat what I do as a craft — not just a job — and I’m intentional about how work is priced, planned, and executed.
I’m most proud of building something on my own terms. There was no blueprint handed to me and no guaranteed path. Getting here wasn’t easy or fast. It involved long days, learning through mistakes, and moments where progress wasn’t obvious yet. I had to figure things out in real time — from managing costs and travel to improving processes and holding myself to higher standards as the business grew.
The challenges forced me to grow. When things didn’t work, I didn’t quit — I adjusted. I learned to separate emotion from decision-making, to stay disciplined even when motivation dipped, and to see setbacks as feedback instead of failure. Over time, that mindset created momentum.
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that consistency beats intensity. Showing up, honoring commitments, and improving incrementally compound in ways most people underestimate. I’ve also learned that autonomy comes with responsibility — when you choose to work for yourself, you’re accountable for everything, and that accountability shapes character.
What I want the world to know about me and my brand is simple: I care deeply about the work I put out, I value trust, and I’m committed to doing things the right way, even when it takes longer. My story isn’t about overnight success — it’s about steady growth, ownership, and building something durable that reflects who I am.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Houston is one of the most diverse places in the country. Some of my favorite places to go and/or to show visitors would be the Museum District, Space Center Houston, Taste of Texas, Timmy Chan’s, Mama’s Oven, The Breakfast Klub, Cool Runnings Jamaican Grill. A week would hardly be long enough to get a full picture of what Houston offers.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d like to shout out the people who supported me during the in-between moments—the times when progress wasn’t obvious yet. Whether it was encouragement, patience, or simply not giving up on me, their belief helped me build the confidence to bet on myself and keep moving forward.
