We had the good fortune of connecting with Pisey Kor and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Pisey, what’s the most important thing you’ve done for your children?
As a parent, I think the most impactful thing I have done with my children is showing them that giving up on our dream is not an option. They have seen me cry because of the uncertainty of my business, happy tears because God’s plan comes to fruition and everything in between. They get to walk this journey along side me and have traveled to business trips with me. So the impact I made is that they don’t have to conform to what society have made us believe that we are here on earth to work a 9-5 and make someone’s else dream a reality. We can make our dream a reality, as long as we work for it. They get to witness a life of entrepreneurship, while still being a fully present parent.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My career started about 20 years ago working for a food manufacturing company as a Quality Assurance Technician. From there I journeyed into working for the USDA, FSIS division for almost 10 years and then back to corporate America for about 5 years. Then after I left the company I started my own Food Safety consulting business and been my own boss ever since. Working in a career that has more men than woman, you have to set yourself apart. In any job, besides knowing the business of it, you also have to have great communication skills. Learning how to communicate, will take you a long way in any career.
What I learn from this journey is that you have to start somewhere. Don’t be a know it all, and always be willing to learn. What I realized is that working for someone is hard, and having your own business is harder. However, the reward of being your own boss is priceless. So we just have to pick the hard and keep going.
The biggest challenge when venturing in your own business is the marketing part, at least for me because that is just not what I am good at. Also, building a trusting relationship with your clients. So for me, I focus on referral business as it is the best form of marketing. If your clients loves you and you serve them well, then you will get referral businesses.
I am most proud of is that I get to help small business owners achieve the same the goals as big corporation while keeping their expenses low.
I am the consultant that looks for their best interest and prefer to do it right the first time so they can go on and continue their business.
Then 2 years ago, I ventured into real estate investing when my third child was 3 months old. This has been a great journey and the best thing I did. To grow in business, it more about collaboration than competition.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I definitely would take my friends to Herman park because there are so much to see in that one place. Also, it is a great park for kids to run around. Definitely some new Asian food places in Katy and Bellaire to hang out and enjoy the fusion of food.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I have many mentors along this journey, however, the one person that really has helped me to know who I am is my mentor Dani Johnson. Without her guidance, I wouldn’t be who I am today. I have discovered the real Pisey Kor. Another person is Brittany Howell, my life coach for the last 2 years . Without the weekly sessions with her, I would have given up on this journey of entrepreneurship and the time freedom I have to live life on my terms. She has been pivotal to my success because starting a new career while caring for a newborn and a family is no easy road. Many times I wanted to run back to the comfort of working for someone, but with her guidance I kept the faith and living my dream life.
