We had the good fortune of connecting with Robert McDougle and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Robert, the decisions we make often shape our story in profound ways. What was one of the most difficult decisions you’ve had to make?
One of the most difficult decisions I made was closing the studio down due to a betrayal near the end of 2020. Instead of seeking retribution I devoted my time to serving others by offering free memorial photography services during December as my way of giving others much needed closure that I myself was lacking. The work was far more rewarding than I could have imagined & lead to what will soon be the reopening.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
That’s actually a difficult one to answer as even now my art is constantly evolving. Though one thing I learned was the value of giving back to others even when all you have to give is your time. Nothing in this life is ever easy, but to overcome challenges one of the best things you can do is simply follow where the inspiration leads you.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Aside from NRG Stadium during Rodeo & Cook Off season one of the best things to do in Houston is follow where the night takes you. It’s not where you go or do, but rather the time spent among friends that’s important. Even when it’s just a simple trip to your favorite coffee shop.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Oddly enough if not for the cruel actions & betrayal of others in 2020 I might have continued down what would have been the wrong path. So perhaps in a way they deserve some unnamed credit as it lead me to where I am today. Though one person I learned a lot from that really inspired me would have to be Jun Wong which was one of the best things to come from such a chaotic year.
