We had the good fortune of connecting with Rosie Crow and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Rosie, how do you think about risk?
Risk-taking, to me, is a natural part of growth, both personally and professionally. It’s like navigating uncharted waters, where uncertainty is the norm and courage is the compass guiding you forward.

Years ago, when I aspired to be a television news reporter, I had doubts and questioned my abilities. Could I measure up to the demands of the job? Would I falter under the pressure of constant deadlines and live broadcasting? Fueled by admiration for trailblazers like Connie Chung, Katie Couric and Doreen Gentzler (my favorite anchor in the Washington, D.C. market), I embarked on my journey despite feeling vulnerable about my ability to succeed.

After earning my BA in Communications with a minor in broadcast journalism from George Mason University, I entered the industry as a production assistant. Through determination, I seized reporting opportunities across the Kentucky and Alabama markets, embracing each challenge as a chance to grow. Whether embedded with the 101st Airborne Division in Fort Campbell, KY, or covering national stories like the Natalee Holloway case in Alabama, each assignment reaffirmed my capabilities to thrive amidst risk.

I’ve learned life often leads to unexpected detours, offering new opportunities and challenges that involve taking risks. Transitioning into public relations and marketing within the health care and government sectors marked a departure from my journalistic roots, introducing a slower pace and more fluid deadlines. However, it was my subsequent leap into real estate that truly epitomized the level of risk-taking I was prepared to embrace in pursuit of a career aligned with my dreams and goals.

Embarking on my real estate journey in 2012, I encountered a steep learning curve, especially in terms of self-promotion and client acquisition. When I got my real estate license, I stepped into unfamiliar territory for the first time. Initially, I anticipated hitting the ground running, expecting clients to flock to me. However, reality proved otherwise. I was thrust into a new realm, navigating the challenges of marketing myself, attracting clients and establishing my presence. It was a big shift from promoting companies and big organizations to promoting myself, which felt awkward at first. While I initially pivoted back to the corporate world for stability, the allure of real estate persisted.

Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, I held a marketing position in the health care industry. Suddenly, our department faced layoffs and significant leadership shifts. Although I remained unaffected, the work atmosphere wasn’t the same. Prioritizing my mental well-being over financial stability, I made the courageous decision to resign, recognizing that income can always be replaced. This bold choice, while daunting, opened doors to new opportunities. A former colleague, also affected by the layoffs, ventured into entrepreneurship, inviting me to freelance for her newly established PR firm. Embracing this chance to contribute, I delved into writing blogs and providing communication support for children’s hospitals across the U.S.

As I settled into remote work, a realization dawned: why not reignite my passion for real estate? With ample time on hand, I eagerly pursued this endeavor, driven by a genuine desire to assist others in finding their dream homes and achieving their aspirations. This profession has always resonated deeply with my identity and values. Reflecting on my journey, I gleaned invaluable insights the second time around.

I soon realized that success in real estate goes beyond mastering the market. It required building trust, being genuine and staying dedicated. By using social media, networking, volunteering and getting involved in my community, I gradually grew my client base and saw the importance of authentic connections. Looking back, I’ve learned a lot about patience, resilience and how relationships can change everything. While the road was filled with challenges, the rewards of persistence and taking chances were truly remarkable.

On a personal level, in March 2018, I embarked on a transformative fitness journey by diving headfirst into my first obstacle race, the Spartan. Initially fraught with nerves, I found myself confronting the unfamiliar territory of competitive obstacle racing. Despite the doubts whispering in my mind, I took the leap and crossed the finish line of my inaugural race. Encouraged by this triumph, I continued to challenge myself, signing up for subsequent races. With each race, I faced a bunch of obstacles demanding mastery of skills like rope climbing, navigating monkey bars, and scaling walls—tasks that tested not only my physical prowess but also my resolve. Amidst the uncertainty and risk, I persisted, determined to push through fear and embrace each challenge. Today, I have completed 18 races and counting. After introducing my husband to Spartan, we’ve been participating in these obstacle races together! AROO!!!

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My journey into real estate has been exciting, influenced by the principles I acquired during my journalism career. Serving the rapidly expanding communities in Fort Bend County, which includes the Houston suburbs of Sugar Land, Richmond, Rosenberg, Fulshear and Missouri City, has been a cherished privilege.

Setting myself apart in such a competitive industry can be challenging, yet my journalistic background has proven to be a formidable asset. As a Realtor, I assume multiple roles, one of which is that of an educator. My ability to convey complex details in a clear and compelling manner has been invaluable.

A moment that truly resonated with me was when a former colleague commended my communication skills on social media, particularly in explaining the intricacies of proposed changes in the real estate landscape. It reinforced how my past experiences in journalism continue to shape my approach to real estate. I never imagined that my skills from one field would seamlessly translate into another, but here I am, not just a real estate professional, but also an educator empowering my clients with knowledge.

What truly sets me apart is my commitment to authenticity. I believe in building my business in a way that aligns with my values. Rather than relying on traditional methods such as cold calling or door-knocking to generate business, I focus on creating genuine connections with people through my educational content and my daily interactions within my community. Through neighborhood blogs, market updates, and buyer/seller advice, I strive to equip clients (and prospects) with comprehensive information that enables informed decision-making, fostering trust and rapport in the process.

Embracing a philosophy of lifelong learning is another cornerstone of my approach. Regardless of one’s tenure in this business, I firmly believe that there’s always something new to discover and learn. I remain committed to expanding my knowledge through classes, workshops, and seminars. Real estate is an ever-evolving field, and I believe in staying ahead of the curve to better serve my clients’ evolving needs.

Moreover, my perspective on achieving success differs from conventional metrics. While many measure success solely by the number of homes sold or the financial rewards obtained, I define my success by the profound impact I make on my client’s lives – the pure joy of helping families achieve their dreams of homeownership. Whether guiding them through the process of purchasing their dream home or facilitating the sale of their property, witnessing the fulfillment of their aspirations is my driving force. Success, to me, means making a meaningful difference in the lives of others, one home at a time.

In essence, what I want the world to know about me and my brand is that I am not just a Realtor; I am a trusted advisor, an educator, and a passionate advocate for my clients’ success. My journey from journalism to real estate underscores the importance of adaptability, continuous learning, and staying true to oneself. When clients work with me, they can rest assured that they’ll have the knowledge they need to make informed decisions, empowering them to navigate the real estate process with confidence.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
For a week-long visit showcasing the best of our area, I’d begin our journey right here in Sugar Land, where there are endless opportunities for both leisure and excitement. We’d start by exploring Sugar Land Town Square, checking out its boutiques and savoring the diverse culinary offerings available at its restaurants.

Among my preferred dining destinations in Sugar Land is Churrascos, known for its delightful Brazilian cuisine. When in the mood for Mexican flavors, Escalante’s is always a reliable choice. Don’t miss their irresistible tres leches cake adorned with shaved chocolate—it’s simply divine. For a change of pace, we could also visit one of my favorite coffee spots in town, Haraz Coffee House. I love the ambiance and vibe of this place.

Throughout our stay, we’d take advantage of Sugar Land’s numerous amenities, from its lush parks to scenic walking trails. A visit to Constellation Field, home of the Space Cowboys, Sugar Land’s minor league baseball team, would be a highlight, offering an exciting and energetic sporting experience.

For a coastal retreat, we’d embark on a day trip to Galveston, about an hour away, where the sandy beaches and captivating attractions of Moody Gardens await. From enjoying the lazy river to exploring the intriguing exhibits and features there, such as the penguin exhibit, there is plenty to see and do.

Venturing into Houston, we’d immerse ourselves in the city’s vibrant cultural scene, visiting world-class museums such as the Museum of Fine Arts and the Houston Museum of Natural Science, each offering a fascinating glimpse into art, history and science.

To experience the outdoors and community atmosphere, we’d spend an afternoon at Discovery Green, enjoying its expansive green spaces, recreational offerings, and lively events. And for those intrigued by space exploration, a trip to Space Center Houston in Clear Lake would provide a memorable experience.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Looking back on my journey, I am thankful to God, whose presence and guidance have been my rock. Drawing from my Christian upbringing, I’ve found strength in relinquishing what’s beyond my control to His hands, trusting in His perfect timing. Alongside my faith, my parents, husband and close friends have been pillars of support and inspiration. Their encouragement and belief in my potential have propelled me through every challenge in my educational and professional pursuits.

I am also deeply indebted to the mentors who have shaped and guided me along the way. Kim Kramer provided me with my first reporting opportunity, which paved the way for my journalism career. My news director, Tracey Rogers, believed in my abilities and entrusted me with reporting responsibilities at WAFF in Huntsville, AL, where I found wonderful, lifelong friends and mentors. Lastly, Gary Steuernagel’s stellar mentorship at Keller Williams Southwest has been instrumental in navigating my real estate career.

Each of these individuals (along with so many others) has played a pivotal role in shaping my journey, and their influence continues to resonate in every success I achieve. It’s been a remarkable journey of growth, gratitude and boundless possibility.
