We had the good fortune of connecting with Sabeen Arianpour and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sabeen, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
I see life in two distinct phases: pre-motherhood and motherhood. Motherhood has profoundly impacted my perspective on balance.

Before becoming a mom, my work-life balance was non-existent. I believed working hard meant working around the clock. I was quite Type A and meticulous, especially with time management. I couldn’t stand wasting even a minute and admired those who could multi-task. And then motherhood happened.

Initially, motherhood completely threw me off balance. For the first time, having a good plan didn’t guarantee the successful outcomes I was used to. A newborn changed everything. Every plan I made to ensure a pacified baby and a well-rested mama went out the window. My plans to tackle my to-do list, care for my son, be a good partner/daughter/sister/friend, manage my home, and everything in between became impossible to follow. At first, I found motherhood discouraging. I loved being a mom and adored my baby, but I felt like I couldn’t balance this role with the other roles in my life.

A year into motherhood, after feeling like I wasn’t excelling in any of my roles, I decided to go with the flow. I learned to say no when I reached my capacity and became comfortable with missing out on some things, trusting that everything would work out as it should. With this shift, motherhood has become the most beautiful blessing of my life. It taught me the importance of slowing down to enjoy the present moment and moving with intentionality and flexibility.

I am still an efficient manager of my time, but I have stopped multitasking and instead focus on single tasks very effectively. I structure my day intentionally, ensuring everything I value receives the appropriate amount of time each day. This requires me to make tough decisions on a monthly, weekly, and daily basis about which things take priority and which need to wait for a different season of my life.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am an aspiring author deeply passionate about documenting the motherhood journey and experience. I am currently working on my first fictional novel, which tells the story of a young mother embarking on a path of self-discovery. This project excites me because it allows me to explore and articulate the multifaceted experiences of motherhood, blending personal insight with imaginative storytelling.

What sets my work apart is the genuine and heartfelt portrayal of motherhood. I aim to capture the nuanced, often untold stories of mothers—their struggles, triumphs, and the profound transformations they undergo. My writing is driven by a desire to reflect the authenticity of these experiences, making them relatable and resonant for my readers.

Professionally, I balance my creative pursuits with a rigorous career in consulting within the social sector. This dual path has been challenging yet incredibly fulfilling. Working in the social sector has provided me with a unique perspective on the diverse narratives and struggles of different communities, enriching my writing with depth and empathy.

As an active mom, balancing a demanding career while nurturing my passion for writing requires meticulous time management and unwavering determination. One of the biggest challenges is finding the time and mental space to write amidst professional responsibilities. I’ve discovered the importance of perseverance, the value of time management, and the necessity of self-compassion. I have had to accept and embrace that progress may be slow at times, but consistently moving forward is the key. Additionally, embracing flexibility and allowing myself to adapt to changing circumstances has enabled me to maintain a balance between my professional and creative endeavors.

I want the world to know that my brand and story are about resilience, authenticity, and the celebration of motherhood. Through my writing, I aim to illuminate the profound and often complex journey of mothers, offering a voice to their experiences. My work is a tribute to the strength and beauty of motherhood, and I hope it resonates with and inspires others.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to give a special shout-out to my incredible mom and dad for their unwavering support and unconditional love as I navigated the early stages of motherhood. Their endless encouragement, wisdom, and understanding provided me with the strength and confidence I needed during those early, challenging days. They showed me the profound love that only parents can, always ready to lend a helping hand or a comforting word. Their presence in my life has been a true blessing, and I am deeply grateful for their guidance and the love they continue to show me and my family. Thank you, Mom and Dad, for being my rock and exemplifying the essence of parental love.
