We had the good fortune of connecting with Sam Sander and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sam, what inspires you?
Whether it’s a beautiful wallpaper paper pattern, a certain type of flower, a type of craft, or a unique color or color scheme I find myself inspired by most common everyday things. Holidays are especially inspiring because I love the feeling of creating a fun and special themed moment that can be enjoyed with your family or friends both in the moment and for years to come. I’ve always loved a good theme and strive to go full tilt to make sure our bespoke backdrops and decor brings that vision to life for our customers and their guests.
My true inspiration for everything I do in life including starting About Last Night is my kids, Alex & Bryce. They inspire me to be the best version of myself not only as their mom but as a woman who is pursuing her goals. I want them to see the results of hard work and commitment and to be willing to take chances to attain their goals as well as support others. Everything I do serves as an example and directional guide for them to reach for their best.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
About Last Night will soon celebrate our 1st anniversary, It has been a year of hard work, tough life/work balance and excitement. In the beginning, we worried about having enough clients to make the business sustainable. Today the challenges include getting to the next level while facing the challenges of expanding from a one-woman show, full-time mom, and working a normal 40-hour job. Being organized and staying on schedule helps alleviate a lot of stress. Remembering that your support system is there and being willing to ask for help is critical. I want to let women, especially young mothers, and Latinas know that you can start a business and be successful while also juggling the ins and out of being a mom. As a mom you feel lots of pressure to be perfect and constantly worry if you are providing everything your children need to grow into productive adults. As an employee, you want to give your company 100%. By combining the skills you use in parenting and work, you will find that it is hard, but rewarding. You can do it!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Since I live south of Houston (League City area) I would take them to Rudy and Paco in Galveston. While there, visit the beach, stop by La Kings on the strand for some ice cream and window shopping, and finish the day with a cocktail on the rooftop bar of the Tremont Hotel. Some other good foodie spots close by in Pearland include Killens steakhouse, Killens BBQ, and Good Vibes Coastal Kitchen. You can’t forget about the awesome seafood, cocktails, and views at Pier 6 in San Leon. Of course, you can’t go wrong with any Mexican restaurant. There’s one on every corner!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I have many shoutouts to give. About Last Night was a vision, an idea, a dream. My decision to start the business while working a full-time job and being a mom was not an easy one. There are so many family and friends who provided love and support and are available as a sounding board for success. They are there when I’m brainstorming ideas that lead to the theme development, doing installations, marketing, giving feedback, helping me promote the business, or just being there for me, There are so many people who have contributed to the success of About Last Night. There are too many to list, but you know who you are and I thank you from the bottom of my heart.
