We had the good fortune of connecting with Shannon Abney and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Shannon, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I tried candle making as a way to help with my anxiety. While doing so, I realized that I only enjoyed the mixing of fragrances process. After researching recipes, dreams, and going with my intuition I realized I wanted to make my own unique combinations of sprays that actually help eliminate odors instead of smothering them. I still really didn’t process this as my business idea in the making because I had no idea if I was actually good at it because it was just an idea. I thought about my own first instinct when I walk in anywhere is the smell. I knew that had to be the same for most people. Oh’Dor Eater was formed from there. I started sending out product to testers and received great feedback. From that moment I knew I would rather try and fail then to not try at all.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
During the early parts of my journey majority of my product testers were smokers. I knew that if my product could help eliminate smoke odor then it would help a lot of people. I also had a few testers that had pets. I wanted to make sure that my products had range for odor eliminating. All of the product testers agreed that the products worked and they loved the smell but I knew that my ultimate product tester was going to be my mom. I remember when I was young I would go shopping with her for perfumes, candles, and air freshener. She always let me smell them and we talked about what we did and didn’t like. Whether it had a fruity smell or smelled too strong. We always critiqued them. She has smelled every fragrance I’ve made and given me her honest opinion every time whether in words or facial expression. If it wasn’t for those moments as a child who knows if Oh’Dor Eater would exist today!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Discovery Green park would definitely be on the to do list for the week which I’m sure will be multiple times for pictures of the artwork. Of course no choice but to go to Galleria for shopping! So many options. There are so many great food options in Houston and knowing my free spirited friend food and drinks would be easier with winging it.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I will scream this woman’s name all over the world when I get the chance! Lashawn Dreher founder of BlkWomenHustle has been amazing throughout my entire journey. I’m so grateful for her guidance, support, and LOVE! My family!!! My family has been the best support system a girl could ask for! My best friend of 20 years deserves an essay but she knows how much I love her! Last but not least my honey! He’s been an amazing motivator, listener, tear wiper, nerve calmer, and never complained! I love you!
