We had the good fortune of connecting with Shaundra Moreland and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Shaundra, we’d love to hear what makes you happy.
The combination of personal freedom and providing it to others has brought me immense joy. My perception of freedom is multifaceted, but in essence, it stems from breaking away from the constraints of social norms and expectations. I’ve found joy in accepting myself and supporting others on their journey to self-discovery.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I kick started my career as a professional dancer in Columbia, SC and Charlotte, NC where I was lucky enough to make connections that allowed me to chase my dreams. My studies at the University of South Carolina led to a Bachelor of Social Work degree, and I have been a full-time social worker for over five years. The most rewarding aspect of my career as a social worker has been serving disproportionate populations that aren’t often given a “voice”. Advocating for the voices of marginalized individuals every day is a crucial aspect of my job. There are moments when being a social worker can be tough and overwhelming. Through the intentional choice to prioritize dance and incorporate more creative outlets, I found the strength and resilience to overcome the stressors in my life.

I kick started my career as a professional dancer in Columbia, SC and Charlotte, NC where I was lucky enough to make connections that allowed me chase my dreams. As of today, I teach hip hop and jazz at Southern Swag Dance Academy in Morganton, North Carolina. In addition, I have had the privilege of having both teaching and performance opportunities in North Carolina. Who knew that social work and dance could make such a unique and thrilling combo?

Two social work characteristics that quickly translate into my dancing career are empathy and personability. Regardless of your chosen profession, it’s important to recognize that you have the power to make a positive difference in someone’s life. We are all experiencing life for the first time and even small acts of kindness and humility can have a positive impact. With the expansion of my brand and dance career, I am committed to upholding my mission of fostering safe spaces that support advocacy, progress, and self-acceptance.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?

Don’t be fooled by its size, Columbia, South Carolina has a handful of “must do’s” that I highly recommend experiencing during your time in my hometown. As our community flourishes and new attractions emerge, I have a few must-do recommendations for experiencing the best of this city. Here’s to my top 4 picks:

Number 1: Soda City Market. Main Street comes alive on Saturdays with Soda City Market, a vibrant gathering of artists and food vendors. It’s a perfect way to start your Saturday with a good time, making new friends, and trying new things from different cultures.

Number 2: First Thursday’s on Main. Our Main Street District hosts a monthly event where talented artists gather to showcase their skills on the first Thursday of every month. It’s such a great way to explore our downtown culture by supporting local artists, musicians, and Main Street businesses.

Number 3: Food and Recreational Activities. If you’re hungry and looking for some good eats, I highly recommend hitting up Main Street, The Vista, and Five Points. They’ve got amazing food! Mack’s on Laurel St. is my go-to spot for some “feel good” food. Mack’s has been a beloved presence in our community for 70+ years. If you want a taste of what our community is like, Macks is a great place to have lunch. Their burgers are top-notch too!

A considerable portion of the community’s culture is dedicated to outdoor activities. If you’re a nature lover, be sure to visit the Riverwalk Park and Amphitheater in West Columbia – a must-see spot for hiking. And for those who enjoy being on the water, take a yacht tour at Lake Murray. Don’t forget to add a love lock to Lake Murray Dam after your yacht adventure. If you’re free between mid-April and mid-June, go pick strawberries at Cottle Farms!

Number 4: Annual and Seasonal Events. The St. Of all the events throughout the year, the Patrick’s Day festival at Five Points is a personal favorite. St. A typical St. Patrick’s Day in Columbia, SC is a festive affair that lasts all day and offers something for everyone to enjoy. In addition to St. Pat’s, I highly recommend checking out the State Fair and the beautiful Holiday Lights at the Vista starting in November. Trust me, it’s worth it!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to shout out my village. I am immensely grateful to my parents for being the most exceptional, dedicated, and supportive people I have ever known. Without you, I would not have the faith or the character that I do now. To my brother and sister, I have learned the value of perseverance and knowing that my siblings will support me no matter what. To my nieces and nephews: in times when giving up seemed like the only choice, you have given me the inspiration to go on. Being the best role model for you guys is all I want. I am grateful to my godmother for always being there to help me discover and pursue my purpose, particularly in the recent months. To my best friends and everyone I’ve met along the way in the dance community, your unwavering love and support serve as a daily reminder of God’s favor in my life, which is a daily source of healing for me. Thank you!
