We had the good fortune of connecting with Sofie Momin and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sofie, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I have always loved baking and making art, and cake decorating felt like the perfect merger of two of my passions. I was keen to bring unique vintage-inspired cakes to the Sugar Land area while maintaining an artistic touch. Coming from an Indian household, I was brought up eating all kinds of South Asian desserts but as I grew older, I wanted to combine traditional Indian flavors with other cakes to create completely unique desserts. Moonlight Baked Goods has allowed me to do both – combine my passions and creative pursuits while also bringing in flavors from my heritage. I started this business to fill a niche of Indian-fusion flavors with the more popular vintage/Lambeth designs that I felt was missing in my community. I really love being able to create delicious edible art!
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Every cake I make is one of a kind and I take pride in that. I am detail oriented in my art so I really like to focus on getting the basics right and then adding in my own touches. I am excited about creating cakes for special occasions and being able to bring in the client’s vision while keeping it true to my vision and creative direction. I really love having the ability to create edible art that tastes amazing but also looks too pretty to cut open! I have had to do so much trial and error, as cake decorating is a constant learning practice. My goal is to get better and better with every cake I make!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Houston is a place for the best food and culture. I’d take them to eat hand rolls at Handies Duozo, Indian food at Aga’s, Persian food at Rumi’s Kitchen, the Khao Soi at Street Food Thai Market, Viet-Cajun crawfish boils at Crawfish Cafe, and so many more delicious cultural food spots. Cafe hopping is also a must! I love finding hidden gems such as Anonymous Cafe as well as frequenting more popular spots like Brass Tacks to get some work done!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My family, best friends, and my partner have been the biggest fans and taste testers for my business while it was still an idea in my head. They have supported my pursuits from the very beginning, providing me with their opinions and insight and continuing to help me grow. They are my support system. They have helped spread word about my business and kept me grounded.
