We had the good fortune of connecting with Terrell Swinton and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Terrell, what role has risk played in your life or career?
When it comes to taking risk, it plays a huge role in my artistry. I feel inclined to push not only myself but the boundaries of what I create. A life with no risk is a life not lived and I choose to create a space where art is free to reveal and govern itself. Beautifully illuminating culture through colors and history on canvas.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My art journey started in 2013 as an abstract expressionist artist living in Houston, Texas. Being a self-taught artist, I am influenced by the 80’s art movement (Andy Warhol, Jean Michel Basquiat, and Keith Haring).

I strive to live my life as art and being my most vulnerable self, naked and free.

I am known for my fluid artwork however; I like experimenting with all elements of art to push the boundaries of my craft. I also like to infuse my art into my photography and videography.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Houston is such a vibrant city, I would have to take them to the museum district so I can show them the art scene (Lawndale, Contemporary Arts Museum Houston, Houston Museum of African American Culture) to name a few. And of course Houston is a melting pot full of good food (Monarch Restaurant & Lounge, Nomad Hookah Lounge, Breakfast The Breakfast Klub, and Aka Sushi House.) And I have recently found a gem The Concepts Studio is a dope event space and photography studio, where vibe is king.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I truly have been blessed to have a GREAT support system and tribe. I thank them all they know who they are!
