We had the good fortune of connecting with Terren Hurst and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Terren, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I, more or less, stumbled into a creative career than having intentionally pursued it. I cannot say that it was merely happenstance, but a series of events that have led to where I am now. In many ways, my journey into becoming a creative began with a vivid imagination, a love of cinema, and an insatiable curiosity. Movies fulled my imagination, my imagination fueled my curiosity, and my curiosity fueled what would become my career in photography. Curiosity is essential, as is creativity, to every human being. Curiosity allows us to discover that which we previously did not know. Curiosity invites us to look deeper and more intentionally at the world we live in.

This world is full of beautiful, awe-inspiring moments. Some are plainly evident. Some are more mundane. All of them deserving of appreciation and all of them fleeting. Even in the most boring part of our days are beautiful moments that can be observed. Appreciated. Dwelled among. These ordinary things are what have, in part, driven me into my career as a photographer. Sharing my curiosity with others in a subjective way that, I hope, causes them to be curious themselves.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Authenticity is at the core of everything I create. I want to be true to who I am as a person and I want to be true in capturing the world in an authentic way. Being true to oneself is not a blatant disregard for the wisdom of others, but not compromising on oneself for the sake of fitting in. Granted there’s nothing wrong with fitting in, but it is incredibly boring. The beauty of being consistently authentic is it allows those who view our work to meet the real person behind the creation. Allowing them to step, even momentarily, into our shoes so that they may learn about us, and that we might learn about them. Authenticity requires being vulnerable. Being vulnerable means being willing to be authentic. Yet, when we allow our curiosity to lead the way we need not being judged. Rather, we invite others to be authentic to us, creating space for others to be real with us.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If you’re looking for a fun, inviting, creative place to explore, I suggest starting in East Downtown (EaDo) and working your way into Downtown. Eden Plant Co. is quintessential Houston with their luscious plants and delicious coffee. Walking the streets and taking the light rail past some of the most iconic Houston locations like Minute Maid Park, Dynamo Stadium, and into the concrete jungle of Downtown Houston. Be curious and be adventurous is my be recommendation because Houston has some of the most underrated but exceptional food and entertainment out there.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are countless people who deserve to be recognized for helping me get to where I am today. None are more deserving than my friends and family who have allowed me to be endless curious, to bounce ideas off them, and have encouraged me to be creative. Their support and encouragement has only emboldened me to keep creating. To keep seeking out the beauty in the everyday. To appreciate this beautiful life we have. I am deeply grateful for each of them for how they have continued to love and support me.
