We had the good fortune of connecting with Ti’Andrea Owens and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ti’Andrea, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
My thought process behind starting my own business was I want to do something where I am happy and I don’t have to think about it being work. I thought about it for three years because I didn’t even know what I wanted to do I just hated where I was at, and although I was in a good position financially I just wasn’t happy. I honestly got the idea to be an MUA from a random person while in Philadelphia who wanted me to do her makeup because she was so impressed with how I did my own, and I unfortunately had to decline to do her makeup because I told her that I don’t actually do makeup and after reflecting I decided I never wanted to turn someone down again. After deciding that I went head first just trying it out and it was the best decision ever made I just wish that sometimes I did it sooner.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
The name of my business is a Juled Makeup Academy and I started it back in 2019 because the love I grew to beautify people‘ by doing their make up. I decided to add Academy to the name because as I was doing training to be a make up artist I went to a Makeup Academy in the UK and I just felt like I didn’t want people to feel like they have to spend as much money or travel as far as I did in order to get the same type of quality of lessons I want people to be able to come to my Academy and learn just as I did.
What sets me apart from other artists is I want to focus more on the educational aspect of make up. I want for artists or even just regular working people to come to me and learn how to do the basics on themselves. I also want those artists to come to me if they want to become the artist that goes into depth and get super creative with looks.
Coming from a background of work that had nothing to do with make up I am most proud of where I have come as an artist over the few years I see growth in my work every single day. I am excited to see where my Academy is going to go in the future.
Getting where I am today in business has not been easy it has been a lot of trial and error because I’ve done it all by myself, no mentor, no nothing. I feel as though by learning through trial and error it has made me more appreciative of everything I have. I’ve learned to celebrate those small wins because at the end of the day they’re still wins. Throughout this entire three-year process I’ve been able to look at what I could have done right if something came out wrong and built from that. I just feel like going into business for yourself is going to be a constant trial and error but i feel that is your biggest teacher in order to be successful, constant willingness to learn and grow.
If I could tell anything about my story it would be to never lose hope always reach out for what you want and no dream is too big. I want the people to know that it’s never too late to start over I completely started over after having a career for almost 9 years I resigned from my salary paying job and signed the lease for my academy the next month. Now Juled Makeup Academy houses three artists that are ready to teach you every day looks as well as provide those makeup services if you don’t want to learn how to do your make up if you just want to come get your make up done and have a luxurious experience. I want people to know that you don’t have to go across the seas to learn what you can learn here in the US you can learn all that here in Buffalo, NY. I am just so proud of how far I have come.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend was coming into town I would have planned the week like this. So I’m envisioning a visit in the fall that way on Sunday we would go straight to the Bills Stadium for football tailgating would start at 7am for 1 o’clock game and be sleep in bed by 6 o’clock. Monday we would wake up go to Khari Cafe and have amazing breakfast and put her to work while there with some admin work done, some goal settings for the week, probably chill for the remainder of the day and watch Sex & The City while drinking wine. Because I am such a foodie for the remainder of the week we will take part in Taco Tuesdays at Senor Tequila, go to Poize on Thursday for karaoke and either eat chicken wings or have a fish fry. I would take her to Niagara Falls if she has never been maybe do a paint and sip class and walk through Elmwood Village. Saturday we would do brunch because that’s my favorite thing to do such a vibe.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Someone who deserves a shout out is my wonderful husband who also happens to be my best friend. He has been so supportive since the beginning especially this past year of schooling to get my esthetics license is constantly on me if he feels as if I’m slacking in any area or just always giving me an extra push. Love you husband!!
