We had the good fortune of connecting with Tierria Joseph and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tierria, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I remember being frustrated because I couldn’t find someone to help me with my natural hair in its curly state, and decided to become what I was looking for in a stylist. I knew if I felt this way, there was definitely more people in my area that felt the same way.
I remember everything that I didn’t like about the salon experience when I was a consumer. So keeping a consumer mindset, being consistent, and knowledgeable has helped me so much.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I specialize in natural hair. More specifically loose natural hair and education. I help my clients learn to care for their curly hair. I literally give them all the tools they need to succeed. We develop a relationship, where clients have to commit to do the work at home, and I do my part at the salon.
It’s sometimes challenging because of clients past experiences, I have to build trust over time. That and getting clients to drop out of You Tube University.
One of the main lessons I have learned is that you have to know who you are and stand firm on it. Even when you are seeing results and business is doing well, there’s always something that will try to tell you the opposite.
I want people to learn to trust again, and know there are stylist that really do care. The success stories, the ah ha moments make what I do so fulfilling, I really love helping my clients.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
One of my favorite places to eat here is The Link Link if I’m craving barbecue, their vegan links are so good. Definitely love Tokyo Japanese Steakhouse, their Onion Soup is unmatched.
If in Houston, I absolutely have to get food from Mo Better Brews, I’m obsessed with the Shrooms and Grits. Any chance I get to get people to try vegan food, is exciting. There as so many places I still need to try.
Spindletop Cruisers’ guided tour downtown is a good way to burn calories and get laughs in at the same time.
One of my favorite places to eat here is The Link Link if I’m craving barbecue, their vegan links are so good. Love stopping by Triangle Nutrition for a Nutribowl. Definitely love Tokyo Japanese Steakhouse, their Onion Soup is unmatched.
Life is short, I believe in going places where you can just have fun and be happy.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I have to shout out Aisha and Aeleise, founders of Cut It Kinky. When I first went to cosmetology school, I just knew there had to be a simpler way to approach natural hair care. I was pointed in their direction and things started to make so much sense. I took classes, and put in the work, and here we are. They’ve also created a community for stylists alike, where we get to support each other.
I DEFINITELY have to give my husband, Kyle, recognition. I walked away from my very demanding career, and he understood exactly what it was I had to do. I knew I wanted to be as involved as possible for our two children, Marly and Kylen, and he supported me 100%.
My family and friends are also very supportive. My parents were so scared when I took my leap of faith, but they get it now, and are proud of how my business has taken off.
