We had the good fortune of connecting with Tomas Fertig and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tomas, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I actually am a technician (programmer, consultant, project manager) and helped since the beginning of the company (i was employee number 5) to grow the company, selling and delivering successful projects. I always liked to understand the challenges around processes of our prospects and customers, and design solutions to help them solve it. In our company i was always considered a solution architect. Becoming an entrepreneur came by coincidence. 18 years ago, i was sent to open a new subsidiary in Mexico, and it took some time, but i was sure i would accomplish it. But the then owners of the company decided at some moment that investment was enough and wanted to close the subsidiary. I offered a management buyout, keeping them with partial ownership, and me funding any additional investment. A couple of months later of the acceptance of that management buyout we were doing good, and we grew constantly, and after 6 years we merged into a larger group. Today i am a shareholder of that company, and managing the US subsidiary of the group. My main thought process behind going for it was a strong belief that giving up is not an option, and that i was able to bring what i promised. Since then, my strongest belief and main driver is to never giving up in pursuing your goals. You can do mistakes, but from mistakes you can only learn. And standing up after a mistake, can only make you stronger. I hope i was able to give this message to my children. Do not give up too easily, and if you have to stop something because it was a mistake, just use it to get to your next goal and challenge. Do not let challenges or mistakes be problems. They are always opportunities to learn, to restart stronger, and to succeed!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Texas and Houston is a multi-cultural, cosmopolitan State and City. People are very open to anybody coming from abroad. For someone who comes to visit the city there are lots of places where to dine, but I would suggest to enjoy the most important Texan culinary ingredient: meat. Either if you do true Texan country burgers, true Texan barbecue, or a good grilled piece of meat, even if meat is not your typical preference, you need to have tasted it. In addition, visiting the NASA facilities should be a must go for any visitor, more important due to the new space exploration era we are heading again. Being one of the cities with major teams in nearly all big sports, a normal time would make me suggest to go at least once to one of the games of the Houston Texans, Houston Astros, Houston Rockets, Houston Dynamo or Houston Dash. Finally, being an outdoor person, Texas and Houston is perfect for a lot of outdoor activities, including golfing, biking, running, hunting, clay shooting, fishing and boating. I regularly take visitors to several of these activities. In most cases i suggest to do some type of outdoor activity per day, and then prepare some cultural or go to a sport event activity.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My main story is about being flexible. I had to move in my life several times and when I married, it is very important that my wife and children followed my when i had to move to different countries. I want to thank and recognize my wife Mariela and both my children Julian and Dafne, who understood and stood by me when i had to travel a lot, and when we had to move twice to a different country. They are the reason for my success and for being able to do what I did in my professional life!
