We had the good fortune of connecting with Uwaila Osemwota-Oronsaye and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Uwaila, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I started my own business as a creative outlet for myself. I have a demanding full-time job so having something to stimulate my creative mind was a necessity! I have always been into skin and body care since I can remember. It really started from me struggling with acne and the hyper-pigmentation that it would leave behind. I was in and out of different dermatologist office just trying to find something that would work and give me long-term results. I soon realized that there were not too many options for me to go to when it came to my melanin rich skin. Out of frustration, I started googling and reading books on natural skincare and how to care for your skin with more simple ingredients. I also learned more about what we put in our mouth also played a major role in our skin health. I later became a pharmacist and learned to incorporate more evidence based ingredients into my skin and body health routine. My goal is to educate more people about how the ingredients they use in their skincare products can really make a difference in what results they get. This is how I came to create my clean, green, and indulgent skincare line, Fazed by Nature. Fazed By Nature’s mission is to nurture and restore black & brown skin with nature-powered, naturally clean, and effective skincare and flexible routines. I personally formulate and currently make each product in small batches. We are slowly growing our product line and can not wait present future products that are currently in process!
What should our readers know about your business?
Fazed by Nature was created based on my believe that many brown-skinned women are defeated by skin anxiety and burn money on products that don’t work for them and make their skin challenges worse. With our pharmacist-formulated and botanically-powered skincare products more black and brown skinned women can regain their confidence and self love by achieving clear and healthy skin. With Fazed by Nature, I promise to provide conscientious brown-skinned mavens with clean, effective, & botanically-powered products that inspire blissful, confident, and indulgent skin experiences. As we continue to grow our product line we keep in mind our vision to make black & brown skin uncompromisingly pampered and protected. Getting to this point was definitely not easy! It took me many late nights and some early mornings to build Fazed by Nature to where it is and by the way, we are still in the growing phase! I work full-time as a Pharmacist so at the moment I am running Fazed by Nature on the side. This has been very challenging. Learning to get important business tasks completed has been my saving grace. I try to make the most out of the little time that I do have. This also includes taking care of my one-year old and also having time for my husband. I have learned that everything does not have to be perfect, instead of striving for perfection I strive for consistency. That made a world of difference when trying to grow Fazed by Nature while having a full-time job. I believe that this is just the beginning for Fazed by Nature. We have so much room to grow! I have so many products in my archive that are waiting on their moment to be released to the world.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Starting with breakfast I would suggest a classic that everyone must go to if you come to Houston, which is Breakfast Klub. I would also include some of my other favorite breakfast spots to choose from like Grace’s, Snooze, Another Broken Egg, and Pappadeaux Brunch (there’s only one location in Houston that offers brunch). One of my favorite areas of Houston is the City Centre, which is in the Memorial City district of Houston. There are so many shopping spots and lots of food options. After shopping around the area and maybe even visiting the Memorial City Mall near by, we could grab a bite at Ra Sushi for a variety of sushi options. I love the vibes this restaurant has its a perfect spot for food and drinks. We could also go out and check out some museums at the Houston Museum District, depending on what exhibits are being shown at the time.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would love to shoutout my family for being so supportive and also allowing me to use them to test out samples of my products during the formulating stage. Of course my husband, Walter Oronsaye, deserves a shoutout for always supporting me when it comes to anything I do! Most importantly for all my #FazedSkin mavens that have been supporting me by making a purchase, they are the reason I keep going!
