We had the good fortune of connecting with Vandhana Ramamoorthy and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Vandhana, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
It started with a deep love for gardening and a strong desire to make a real impact. I’ve always believed that growing your own food can be life-changing. It connects you with nature, improves your health, and builds resilience. Growing food isn’t just practical. It’s powerful.
As a mom and a lifelong gardener, I wanted to help families grow their own fresh, organic food — even if they were busy, overwhelmed, or had never planted a seed before. Starting my own business gave me the freedom to combine my science background, my love for teaching, and my passion for sustainable gardening into something truly meaningful.

What should our readers know about your business?
Vibrant Rainbow Gardens started with one simple goal: to help people grow beautiful, abundant gardens — even if they’re busy, overwhelmed, or have no idea where to start. I specialize in working with new gardeners and families who want to grow their own food in a way that’s organic, sustainable, and doable for real life.

What sets my business apart is how personal and hands-on it is. I don’t just hand people a generic garden plan — I walk with them through the whole process, from designing their space to teaching them how to nurture it with confidence. My clients often tell me it finally clicked after working with me — that growing food felt possible, even joyful.

I’m especially proud of how this business has grown organically through trust, word of mouth, and real results. Whether it’s a family harvesting their first tomatoes or someone transforming a bare yard into a pollinator paradise, those wins light me up. One client recently sent me a photo of the most beautiful cucumber I’ve ever seen — the very first one she grew from seed. That’s the kind of transformation I love to celebrate.

The journey hasn’t always been easy. I’ve had to navigate growing a business while moving homes, raising a family, and building everything from scratch. But what’s carried me through is the joy I see in my clients, and the belief that small steps can lead to big change.

Looking ahead, I’m excited to expand Vibrant Rainbow Gardens beyond one-on-one coaching. I’m currently developing a series of online gardening courses designed for busy families and beginners — simple, encouraging, and full of practical guidance that cuts through the overwhelm. My hope is to make gardening more accessible to more people, no matter their schedule or experience level.

If there’s one thing I want people to know about Vibrant Rainbow Gardens, it’s this: we’re not just about growing plants — we’re about helping people create spaces that feed their bodies, calm their minds, and bring them back to what truly matters.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend came to visit, I’d plan a week filled with good coffee, beautiful gardens, delicious food, and the kind of simple joys that make Houston special.
We’d kick things off with a relaxed morning at Pearland Coffee Roasters or Luce Coffee, catching up over great coffee before heading to the Houston Botanic Garden — it’s one of my favorite places to slow down, wander through native plant collections, and get inspired.
We’d spend time exploring the Butterfly Center at the Houston Museum of Natural Science — it never gets old, and it’s one of those peaceful, awe-inspiring spots that everyone loves. I’d also take them plant nursery hopping (you can’t visit me without that!), and of course, I’d show off my garden.
As a vegetarian, I love how Houston offers so many incredible food options. Whether it’s Indian, Thai, Japanese, Mediterranean, or Tex-Mex, there’s always a flavorful vegetarian meal to enjoy here.
At some point during the trip, I’d cook a huge garden-to-table feast at home — seasonal veggies, fresh herbs, homemade chutneys or dips, and maybe even edible flowers for that little extra magic. We’d eat outdoors if the weather cooperates, surrounded by the very plants that made the meal.
Before my friend leaves, I’d send them home with a little bundle of garden love — cuttings, herbs, maybe a jar of something homemade, and a packet of seeds or two. Because around here, we don’t let visitors leave empty-handed

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
First and foremost, I have to thank my family especially my kids— they are the real MVPs behind the scenes. They’ve patiently supported every garden experiment, tolerated seedlings on every windowsill, and helped move more plants than most people do furniture. Their love and encouragement gave me the space to grow — both literally and figuratively.

To the Houston gardening community: thank you for being such a generous, welcoming, and inspiring group. Your support, shared wisdom, and enthusiasm over the years have kept me motivated through heat waves, setbacks, and wild garden dreams.

A big shoutout to Gardenary, whose platform sparked the idea that passionate local gardeners could become coaches and changemakers. That vision helped me turn my gardening know-how into a business that’s rooted in purpose.

And finally, Urban Harvest Houston deserves so much credit for introducing me to permaculture and helping me deepen my understanding of working with nature. Their educational programs were a turning point in my journey and continue to influence how I teach and design gardens today.
