We had the good fortune of connecting with Winnie Nyatome and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Winnie, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
My thought process behind starting my business was that I needed to be able to rest whenever I wanted. I was tired of getting up extremely early just to go and work for someone else. Eventually, I trusted myself and took that step and I am so grateful I did.

What should our readers know about your business?
My full time job is being a lifestyle and wedding photographer. What sets me apart from others, is the fact that I actually love my job. I really do think I love photographing people more than anyone on this planet. I love encouraging my clients, complimenting them throughout the session and making them feel loved and seen. I am most proud and super excited when my clients love the photos of themselves that we created together.

I got to where I am today in my business because I understood early on that nothing strong and long-lasting is built over night. Slow and steady truly wins the race, and the same is true with business. When it’s not going well, I encourage myself, take breaks or a vacation, and sometimes re-evaluated everything. Then I wake up the next day and cook up a plan to get me to where I want to be.

I want people to know that taking photos is a fun activity. But more than anything, I want people to fall in love with themselves even more, especially because these are the very memories that they will look at forever. Every human is so beautiful and photos prove that over and over again.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Growing up in Houston, specifically around Spring, I spend a lot of time in Old Town Spring and that would be our very first stop to window shop and look through all the wonderful stores. They also have tons of restaurants and food trucks around, so I know we would find something to eat on the go or take time to sit down and enjoy a meal together. The Woodlands is around the corner as well, so we would absolutely take time to go to the Woodlands Waterway to breathe in the fresh air and maybe take some cute photos. I am big on two-stepping, so of course we would have to check out Whiskey River dance hall to dance the nights away. I love being outside so we would have to see the W G Jones State Forest to take a walk and enjoy the trees and greenery. Lastly, when we go to a restaurant we would go to Palette Indian Kitchen first before any other place.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My biggest shoutout will always go to my parents for being pioneers and taking steps to come to America so myself and my siblings can have more opportunities. But if I was to give a shoutout, outside my family, it would be my wonderful clients who take a chance on me and trust me with their memories, without their support and trust, I wouldn’t have a business.

I am the type of person who’s easily inspired when I see people live their lives the way they want. So I would also have to give a shoutout to all photographers out there, and the ones who came before me. It’s always nice to see others working on their craft and share it for everyone to see. It’s motivating and inspiring!

But my biggest shoutout, has to go to my little husband. At the beginning when I didn’t know what I was doing and needed a second pair of eyes to double check my photos, he was always willing and ready to preview. I am forever grateful I have a partner who loves to see me grow and thrive, and willing to help whenever I need it.
